Obscuryl landed on our radar with “Cosmic Laughter” and it’s a new single that makes a strong first impression. The production has so much going on and everything sounds solid and polished. The vocal delivery is smooth and the melodies keep pulling us back in.
There is a mix of sounds here and all tied together with a unique vocal style. It could have turned into a messy combination but the mixing keeps things clear and lets each part do its job. The instrumental is great and has character too. It builds a strange and open atmosphere and that works well with the vocals and never sounds too crowded overall.
The title might suggest something light, but the idea behind the song has another side. Obscuryl writes about the contrast between beauty and things falling apart around us, and about being curious when life does not always make sense. That gives the track more to work with than a nice beat. There is a quiet tension in that contrast. The music can draw us in even while the subject points towards a less comfortable view of the world.
One detail worth mentioning is that Obscuryl makes his music himself, from the first parts of the track through to the final mix and master. You can hear care in how the sounds fit together, without the production taking over. The writing is deep and gives the track something to say.
“Cosmic Laughter” is an honest and meaningful listen from start to finish. This is our first time listening to this artist and it’s a good introduction. We like the smooth vocals, the strong melodies and the way the production leaves space for the song’s unique mood.
