Q: Can you tell us a bit about yourself and how your childhood impacted your musical direction?
A: I am Kim Castle, a producer, singer and songwriter based at Idunsfella Studios in Oslo, Norway. I am only 33% of detdusa. The other producers, Losifer and TB Cargo, tend to keep a low profile and are only keen on bringing great ideas to the table and making art out of them. Not so much into doing interviews and all. Aren’t we all?
My background is from the metal scene in Bærum, outside Oslo, where I used to play rhythm guitar and sing in (the true) Metadox back in the mid-90s. The other guys from that band went on and formed successful acts like Susperia and Abyssic, to mention a few. Later, I went on and formed Wrong From the Start with singer and producer Hasse, known from epic Norwegian hardcore groups such as Angst and Jin’ Rik’ Sha’.
That was a bit off track, sorry. I was a bit of an emotional child, but one might say it was quite a normal childhood. There are some wounds there that somehow forced me into, first, a deep dive into music, and later into finding comfort and healing in making my own music and lyrics. To more accurately hit the hurting spots in my soul. I am being a bit dramatic now, but sometimes I really feel that. The Darker Nights EP is more of a relationship-healing thing. Let’s leave it at that.
Q: Can you describe the musical style of detdusa in three words?
A: True Norwegian Elektronika.

Q: You have just released your new EP, Darker Nights. Is there a story behind it?
A: Darker Nights is the second EP in a trilogy. It has been marinating for a while, but suddenly, this fall, there was a whole lot of darkness and sickness infiltrating us. We came out alive, knowing we don’t make the story. Enough darkness. Stay tuned for the more uplifting New Dawn EP, to be released in spring 2027.
Q: What is your favorite track from the EP and why?
A: We hereby feel insulted. But if you must, it has to be “Your Expectations,” just because we are so honoured that Pacewon from the legendary Outsidaz wanted to join in with epic bars. I don’t even.
Q: Can you walk us through the creative process of producing the EP, Darker Nights?
A: Say, we somehow feel that we didn’t produce Darker Nights. Darker Nights produced us, and that is why we are detdusa. No rules, just what we feel.
But some inside info regarding the opening track, “Your Expectations”: That one started with co-producer Lisa Rockfield and me wanting to capture the nerve in “Knutsens Drøm” by the epic Norwegian duo Knutsen & Ludvigsen, so we sampled the mandolin. Boom. Lisa made vocals, I wrote lyrics, and suddenly the sample was not enough, so I played new fucking mandolin to make it fit. But then that didn’t work, and then… I mean, we spent about 200 hours on that track. At least I did.
Q: What has been the most memorable concert or performance for detdusa so far?
A: We did our first live act ever at a really cool venue in Grünerløkka, Oslo, called Parkteatret, supporting Mariann Rosa, a totally condescending, bossy bitch known from the kick-ass, uplifting band Surferosa. But the nerve that gave our set, and our visuals—they turned out so good. That was a good detdusa gig, and I think you can find a snippet from it on YouTube.
Q: Reflecting on your body of work, each song holding its unique significance, could you share a particular track that stands out to you personally? What makes that specific tune special, and why does it hold a place of pride in your musical journey?
A: That is the cruelest question. But back in 2005, my best friend and I lost our best friend in a motorcycle accident. His father wanted us to pick all the tracks for the funeral. There was “Orion” by Metallica for when people found their seats, and several other bangers during the ceremony, but when the coffin was lowered, Monster Magnet’s “Baby Götterdämerung” did its magic. So there you have it. R.I.P. Ola. We miss you.
Q: As we wrap up our conversation, looking ahead, what aspirations or dreams do you have, and what message would you like to share with your fans as they continue to accompany you on this musical journey?
