Detdusa returns with “Darker Nights”, a release that takes electronic music into a darker place without losing the groove. The Norwegian project, made up of Kim Castle, Losifer and TB Cargo, brings Lisa Rockfield into the mix as producer and vocalist, and that extra voice gives the EP another layer. It is not an EP that needs a big introduction. The music gets to work quickly.
“Domestic Silence” opens things with Lisa’s haunting vocals, clean sound design and electronic details that sit nicely around the beat. The production is simple but sounds professional. There is a dark mood here, but the track does not try too hard to prove it. It just sits there and lets the atmosphere build.
Then there is “When in Cuba”, and this was one of those tracks that kept getting another replay. Every beat and small element sounds placed with care, but it still moves naturally. There is a lot going on without making the track messy. It has a sound that is hard to compare with something else, which is probably part of why it stayed in our head.
“3 ILL Things” is our favourite. The groove is strong, the sound design is sharp and the production is solid and full of small details hiding around the track. Lisa’s vocal layers are good here. This is also where the care behind the whole EP becomes very clear.
“Your Expectations” takes things somewhere else again. The electronic base, beat and melodies are already working, but Pacewon changes the track completely with his bars. His does not sound like a name added for attention. It belongs there. Lisa’s chorus is excellent too, giving the song a strong hook and a nice contrast with the rap. Given how much time the team spent shaping this track, it makes sense that the details stand out.
The closing track, “När Allt Faller På Plats (J. Den Godes Anthem)”, slows everything down with a softer sound and simple musical work. It is a calm way to end an EP that spends most of its time in darker territory. The softer ending also gives the record some breathing room.
It took us almost a month to finish this review, which probably says enough about how much there was to come back to. The collaborations are carefully chosen, and the guest parts never distract from the main identity of the project. The production is strong and every track has something worth finding. We liked detdusa’s music a lot, but more than that, we liked the care behind it. “Darker Nights” is a well-made release and we will definitely be keeping an eye on what comes next.
