Conversation With Isaac Roux

Q: Hey, can you tell us a bit about where you come from, and what made you want to start a career in music?

A: I was born in Brugge, a small pittoresk city in Belgium. It sounds cliché but from a young age I always wanted to be a performer. It started with me dancing on tables for my entire family. When I was 7 I picked snail drums in a local marching band in my home town (Adegem). During my love for drums I started to play classical guitar. Something that influenced me a lot as a musician. From the moment I started to play chords on a guitar it was for me the epiphany of life. Soon I started to make my own songs and lyrics and before I knew it I had my own little band.

Q: And what other artists have you found yourself listening to lately?

A: That depends on what emotion I feel these days. When I’m in a melancholic mood I tend to listen a lot to indie folk (Ben Howard – Kevin Morby – King Hannah – Bony King Of Nowhere). When everything is going well I listen more to thrash metal or post rock. Something that is very contradictory if you ask me?

Q: Who were your first and strongest musical influences?

A: Passenger: Cause he showed me my first basics of folk fingerpicking

Mumford and Sons: massive organic arrangements and strong heartwarming lyrics.

Q: You have just released your new single, ‘White Rose’. Is there a story behind it?

A: Yes, the song stands for escaping a destructive relationship. It’s something that has been haunting me since I was 19 years old. very strange that it popped up again because now everything is going to roses 🙂

Q: Can we expect a new EP or even an album from you in the near future?

A: Yes, I have been writing a lot and in 2022 we recorded a lot of ideas that have been boiling up in my mind. Very excited to show more of my music.

Q: What do you feel are the key elements in your music that should resonate with listeners, and how would you personally describe your sound?

A: I think my sound is a mix of indie folk that is drenched in an electronic ambience. I hear a lot that it is a mixture of artists like  Bon iver, Ben Howard, and perfume genius.

Q: Do you feel that your music is giving you back just as much fulfillment as the amount of work you are putting into it, or are you expecting something more?

A: It is always a risk releasing new music. Especially your debut single. But I am very proud of what we’ve accomplished in such a short time. It gives me a lot of energy to work harder and keep crafting new goals.

Q: Could you describe your creative processes? How do you usually start, and go about shaping ideas into a completed song?

A: It always starts with a melody that swims around the chord progression. After words I listen to what feeling I get by playing those chords in a repetitive way. Mostly the lyrics are influenced by things that haunt me in life or inspiration i found in small things like, certain situations or movies, books, poetry etc.

Q: What has been the most difficult thing you’ve had to endure in your life or music career so far?

A: I rather not say.

Q: On the contrary, what would you consider a successful, proud or significant point in your life or music career so far?

A: We had the opportunity to play AB which is one of the biggest venues in Belgium. Noah Gundersen’s support is also something that I will treasure the rest of my life. Meeting Bear’s Den backstage and having a bevvy is something that is printed in my mind.
