Spaced Negative – Rumblings

Spaced Negative is a new EDM producer, but their new single “Rumblings” does not sound like a first release from someone still trying to work out the basics. There is a lot of care in this track, from the sound design to the mixing, and it becomes clear that so much time has gone into getting the details right.

The track moves between a softer dance sound and a stronger electronic side without making the change seem forced. The beat work is one of the best parts here. It has energy, but it never becomes too much, which gives the track room to breathe. The percussion also adds something extra as the track moves forward.

The vocal hook is catchy and the layering is good. Nothing sounds pushed too far, and the vocal sits properly inside the production work. The mix and mastering are solid and give the whole track a clean finish without taking away its character.

What makes this track more interesting is the idea behind it. The track looks at those early signs of change in life, when something is starting to happen but the full picture is not clear yet. That works well with the music because the track itself keeps moving between lighter moments and heavier electronic sections.

For a first independent release, this is a very strong start. We really liked the care behind it and our biggest takeaway is how professional Spaced Negative already sounds. We will be interested to hear where the next releases go.

ABOUT THE ARTIST:

Spaced Negative is the solo music project of myself, Pete Williams, setting out to explore personal themes and expectations around life. As someone who was born to a middle-class family and very much fell into the belief that we all had our “lanes” in life, this project comes with an enormous amount of humbled learning as those ideas get challenged. Fear is good, some might say.

As anyone who has released any art into the world can attest to, it is almost always terrifying. Fear of rejection, fear of failure, even sometimes fear of success (well, what next?), are some things that usually find a home in your mind. In a world where we are already battered by one bad news after the next (thanks to our tech overlords), why would one volunteer for more? With the mid-life crisis now being the quarter-life one for this generation, the only way to find out is to walk the line with the rest of ‘em.

Rumblings represents the start of a journey, where maybe things aren’t as bad as they appear to be, and maybe you just need to stare into yourself a bit harder, to right where it starts to feel uncomfortable, then stare a bit more. Sometimes that might bring us down, but what comes out the other side is almost always worth it. Or you can just chill and have fun, that’s a pretty cool option too.
