Q: Welcome back, The Divys! It’s fantastic to have you with us again. Since our last conversation, a lot has happened in your musical journey. To kick things off, could you share some highlights or pivotal moments that have shaped your artistic path since our last interview?
A: Our sound seems to keep evolving. In the beginning, you could say we sounded very 80s New Wave. While we’re still very influenced by that era, our last few songs seem to have taken a sort of turn, incorporating heavier bass lines, and different song structures. I don’t think there’s been one pivotal moment, but probably the realization that every moment has the potential to be that.
Q: Can you describe the musical style of The Divys in three words?
A: Electronic Pop Rock
Q: How do you stay connected with your fans, and what role do they play in shaping your musical journey?
A: The music industry has changed so much over the past few decades. Once, labels would sign and nurture a new artist or band, and now it’s up to bands to do all of that before they even get noticed by the labels. So, that being said, we try to post our music on several platforms, and as we get fans, we connect with them to let them know of upcoming releases and other news. For us, we enjoy making music we love, so it really means something when we get noticed. We never even think about trying to replicate the current trends because, one, it’s not in our creative wheelhouse, and two, even if we could, by the time we released it, it would be old news. So, we just chug along doing our own thing. So, thank you to those who appreciate and like what we’re doing.
Q: You have just released your new single, ‘On My TV’. Is there a story behind it?
A: Our song before that, I Miss You When I See You, was inspired by a movie of the same name. We took the idea a bit further by exploring getting confused between reality and TV, and falling for a character that isn’t real.
Q: What is your favorite verse or part from the track and why?
A: Nighttime, let’s begin. Because it sounds naughty!
Q: Can you walk us through the creative process of producing the track, “On My TV”?
A: This song started out a bit different. Usually, Kliffee will come up with a guitar riff or a chord progression, and the song builds from there. This one started out with the bass line under the verse and intro, and just sort of grew from there.
Q: What has been the most memorable concert or performance for you so far?
A: I think it was performing at a local club in Philly for about 20 people. Nothing is more humbling than that! But, the 20 people that were there, wanted to be there, and we’re thankful for that.
Q: Reflecting on your body of work, each song holding its unique significance, could you share a particular track that stands out to you personally? What makes that specific tune special, and why does it hold a place of pride in your musical journey?
A: William: Songs are like our children, each special in their own way. One that stands out for me is Every Road Leads Back To You. There’s a certain sadness in the realization that someone would be happy settling for part of a relationship rather than being alone. I think it’s part of the human condition that everyone can relate to.
Q: Exploring the diverse creative processes within the music industry is always fascinating. Could you provide insight into The Divys’ unique approach to crafting music? From the initial spark of an idea to the finished song, how do you navigate the creative journey and bring its musical concepts to life?
A: William: I keep a notebook of words and phrases, parts of possible future songs. Kliffee keeps recorded files of guitar riffs and chord progressions. Somehow, they just find their intended match, and it works. Initially, we always think we know where the song will end up, its final sound, but each song always seems to take its own path, and most times, the finished master is very different from the initial idea.
Q: As we wrap up our conversation, looking ahead, what aspirations or dreams do you have for The Divys, and what message would you like to share with your fans as they continue to accompany you on this musical journey?
A: I think that childhood dreams never die, they just change in an ever-changing world. In our case, that’s the music industry. So hearing our music “on the radio,” or whatever that means in today’s world, is that dream. So, to anyone who calls themselves a Divys fan, thank you, it means more to us than you’ll ever know.
