Q: Can you tell us a bit about yourself and how your childhood impacted your musical direction?
A: I was thefront women for NYC based rock band G-spot for 15 years. With the band we performed all over NYC and did some touring, as well as releasing two CDs to rave reviews. After leaving NY I did a couple of solo releases and performed locally in Sarasota FL. The latter solo relelease’s were more singer songwriter and explored consciousness in an increasing complex & challenging world. I was also the Founder of the Girls Rock & Girls Rule, an organization that dedicated itself to creating exposure for women in hard rock and giving back to organizations serving women and girls.
For the past several years I’ve been very focused on songwriting and collaborating with other writers and artists. I love exploring new genres and perspectives. My catalog spans across several genres from pop, dark cinematic, alt pop, rock and singer-songwriter. Our songs have been featured on Netflix, MTV, and Peacock including shows such as Love Island, Ultimatum Queer Love, Love is Blind and more. I am super excited to be releasing some new personal artist tracks this year for the first time in many years!
I had an interesting musical journey as a child I loved music and was always singing along. I also sang in chorus through about junior high and wrote poetry as a small child. Weirdly as a very rebellious teenager, I hung around with musicians and went to lots of concerts etc., but didn’t personally pursue music. I then went on to college and to get an MBA. After moving to NYC and starting a career in the corporate world, I decided I really wanted to sing. Voice lessons followed as well as a boyfriend who taught me guitar and encouraged me to write, and the rest is history. Music is my passion and I can’t let it go, I am fortunate to be in a place in my life right now where I can give it a lot of focus and attention.
Q: How are you planning on growing your fan base and sharing your music with the world? What message do you have for anyone who is about to discover “Gail Silverman AKA G”?
A: I always try to bring as much authenticity and emotion to any song I write and hope it can make them feel something.I am also not afraid to step outside the lines and do something a bit weird and quirky. I am so appreciative of people who support independent artists and are willing to check out my songs. My dream is that my music can touch others and possibly help them through a situation, make them cry, laugh and experience emotion as others music does for me. I encourage them to check out the new material, but if you want to rock out with some serious angst be sure to explore my G-spot catalog!
As far as growing a fan base, I collaborate with other artists on the songwriting side, they often have a strong following and will release the music we write which gives it a broader audience. As mentioned this year I am planning several solo artists releases, the first one being “The Womb” which drops April 30, followed by 2-3 more throughout the year. For the current release I have been doing a lot of social media promotion letting followers peak behind the curtain at the process, song story etc. I have also been pitching to blogs such as Bored City and local community radio. Also a big part of my music journey the past few years has been pitching music for sync licensing (film, TV, ads etc.) though very competitive, landing a placement can really bring a ton of exposure the artist.
Q: Who is the most inspiring artist for you right now? And where do you find inspiration for making music?
A: That is always such a hard question for me. I pride myself on always trying to find and listen to new music and genres. I am a big listener of Spotify playlists like Discover Weekly and Pop Rising, to see what songs stand out to me. I also often hear some amazing songs on the series I watch, Shazam is great for this. And I definitely tend to favor the female POV. I like a lot of alt indie, emotive folk and dark and moody cinematic.
Q: Can you tell us about the story or message behind the song, “The Womb.”?
A:I love telling the story behind this song as I think it’s pretty unique. A few years ago I went through some real challenges and a lot of loss in a short time. There was a period where I didn’t feel supported or safe and could get quite anxious. One place that alway chilled me out and calmed my nervous system was the bath. They became a regular thing for me when I was feeling anxious or upset or just wanted to relax. One day I was in the bath and thinking about what it was about the bath that was so soothing, and I thought maybe it was because it was like being in the womb. And so the song was conceived (yes pun intended LOL). I immediately grabbed my phone and started writing lyrics right there in the tub. I then reached out to my co-writer and producer in Mystic Femmes, Sharon Roach about co-writing the song with me. The overall message of the song is about a longing to feel safe and supported when life feels challenging.
Q: How would you describe your sound in one word for potential listeners?
A: One word wow that’s a tough one… True, Emotional, Ambient ok sorry that’s 3 words!
Q: Did you face any challenges while writing or recording “The Womb”?
A: Not really, only my own problems with imposter syndrome and perfectionism, and worrying that it wasn’t good enough to release.
Q: What is the message of your music? And what are your goals as an artist?
A: The message in my music varies depending on the song. Sometimes it is very personal and self reflective. Sometimes it’s empowered, sometimes it’s quite dark and others its fun and tongue in cheek…songwriting is therapy and expression and often times comes from where you are in life. About a year and a half ago I met my partner who is amazing, I never wrote love songs in my life, but you can definitely expect some of those coming soon! I am grateful to still be writing and releasing music, it would be a dream to actually be able to support myself through my art.
Q: Who is your dream artist to collaborate with? (dead or alive)
A: I have to pick one LOL. Here are a few, Mick Jagger, Dave Grohl, Janis Joplin, Pink
Q: What is your advice for people interested in pursuing music as a career or for those trying to enter the industry?
A: Do it because you love it and can’t not do it. Learn as much as you can about your craft and the business. Have a thick skin its not an easy business and you will face rejection. Be authentic to your artist and don’t let other people tell you who you can and can’t be and what you can and can’t do musically. And don’t fly solo, collaborating is so helpful both to make you better at whatever area you are focused in and the support of community and collaborators can keep you going when its tough.
Q: If you could go back in time and give a younger you some words of wisdom, what would they be?
A: OMG start earlier, don’t quit those guitar lessons you tried early on, take those voice lessons your mom offered when you were 16. Rebelling against everything isn’t all it’s cracked up to be and you may miss out on some things. And to study music in college instead of business!
