Conversation With Agnes Huster

Q: Hey, can you tell us a bit about where you come from, and what made you want to start a career in music?

A: I’m from Luleå, Sweden originally. My home was always filled with music, we’re a big choir family where everyone sings kind of and all sorts of music were played at home, from Swedish classics to Earth Wind & Fire and AC DC.

It feels like it’s in my DNA somehow. I can’t remember music not being a fundamental part of life. All moments of life have a soundtrack. Especially the most vital, most emotional ones. I need to sing them.

Q: Did you have any formal training, or are you self-taught?

A: Mostly self-taught but I’ve sung in many different choirs and took singing lessons for some years in high school.

Q: Who were your first and strongest musical influences?

A: Shakira, Brittney Spears, Beyoncé and Rihanna. I remember when my friend got Shakira’s Laundry Service CD for her birthday. I thought it was so freaking cool. I eventually began collecting CD:s, I mostly listened to all Alicia Keys album’s, Rihanna, Carola, Katy Perry and MIKA to mention a few.

Q: You have just released your new single, ‘Heaven Underground’. Is there a story behind it?

A: I had known for a very long time that I have to write a song about the climate emergency. I simultaneously had a collab with artist Sky Li planned and said why not do it together? We began writing this pop rock song about the climate crisis.

I wanted it to be a raw, honest song about climate change with a sarcastic humorous edge to catch people’s attention and not be scared away to face the crisis we’re in the midst of.

As we ended up writing this pop rock climate change bop which was too far away from Linnéas soundscape I invited Lejonclou to sing with me and co-write on the track instead. Alva (Lejonclou) really gave the song an extra edge with fun lyrics and melody ideas such as bringing Greta Thunbergs ‘‘how dare you’ into the chorus.

I (obviously) wanted to do a music video as well and reached out to Harvest Films to make my visual vision of the song come alive:

Q: Can we expect a new EP or even an album from you in the near future?

A: As we say in Sweden,  “the one who waits for something good, never waits too long.

Q: What do you feel are the key elements in your music that should resonate with listeners, and how would you personally describe your sound?

A: My goddess aura, confidence and raw honest sound. I would describe my sound as unapologetic pop with an edge, influenced by Rihanna and Billie Eilish.

Q: Do you feel that your music is giving you back just as much fulfillment as the amount of work you are putting into it, or are you expecting something more?

A: Yes definitely. There’s nothing giving more fulfilment than creating music.

Q: Could you describe your creative processes? How do usually start, and go about shaping ideas into a completed song?

A: Each process is unique but mostly, I have a topic I want to sing/write about.

Either I sit by the piano/guitar and write a chord progression, melodies OR a producer gives me a draft beat/instrumental and I start writing melodies & lyrics on top of it.
The core feeling of the song usually falls into place quite quickly and I write lyrics simultaneously as the producer develops the production and we give each other feedback. I always see visions in my head of the music video as I write and pour my feelings and values into the song as I write.

Q: What has been the most difficult thing you’ve had to endure in your life or music career so far?

A: The occupational burnout I went through in 2020 and everything that included. I wrote my song Through The Fire about it around the time the burnout peaked.

Q: On the contrary, what would you consider a successful, proud or significant point in your life or music career so far?

A: Realising that my worth and the worth of my life is constant and does not depend on how well I perform as an artist and in my professional life. This realisation was the outcome of the occupational burnout I went through. I made a reel about this under my Instagram highlights that my fans really appreciated together with the organization Mind.
