Album: Crash & Chaos – Shut Up & Listen

Crash & Chaos have released their debut album “Shut Up & Listen”, a 12-track punk rock record that does not waste much time getting started. The album is loud, direct and packed with the kind of hooks that can stay in your head after the music stops. There is a clear love for old-school pop-punk here, but the record is not only trying to bring back a sound from another time. It has its own odd little world, full of bad choices, jokes, relationships and stories that are not always trying to act serious.

The biggest strength is the energy. The guitars have so much bite, the drums keep things moving and the basslines give the songs a solid push underneath. Nothing is buried in the mix. The production is polished enough to make the melodies stand out without taking away the rough punk edge. That balance works well, especially when the choruses arrive. Most of the choruses here are easy to remember and that matters on a record like this.

The lyrics are another reason this album works. Crash & Chaos can move from funny stories to more personal moments without making the change sound forced. Some songs are built around real-life stories, while others take a more ridiculous route. “Fly” is probably the clearest example of the more personal side, written as a message to a loved one about moving forward after loss. It gives the album a different weight without changing what the record is about.

There is also something refreshing about not taking every song apart one by one. The album works best as one loud run from beginning to end. With 12 tracks and very little wasted space, it is easy to put on and let the whole thing play. “FML” was our favourite here, mostly because the chorus lands so well, but there are strong moments all over the record. “Abductions” and “Chili Mac Supreme” bring great humour, while the more personal songs stop the album from becoming one long party.

The band has made a record that knows exactly what it wants to be. It is catchy, noisy, funny and sometimes more honest than you might expect. We liked the melodies, the guitars and the way the band keeps the energy high without making every song sound identical. Our only real complaint is that some listeners may want a little more variation in places, but that is a small issue when the whole point is to turn this thing up and enjoy it.

For us, this release is an easy recommendation for anyone who still enjoys loud pop-punk with big choruses and a sense of humour. It deserves more attention, and it is the sort of album that works better when taken in one sitting. There is enough here to keep the record moving without much effort.
