Album: Alison Whiteacre – Coming Out Alive

Alison Whiteacre just released her new album “Coming Out Alive”, and it’s one of those records that doesn’t try too hard but still leaves a strong impression. The album opens with “The Lively Maiden” and straight away it sets the tone. It’s soft, very gentle and driven by acoustic guitar, but not boring at all. The melodies are warm and kind of float around instead of pushing forward too hard. It’s a calm start, maybe even a bit emotional if you sit with it long enough.

Then “The Fake McCoy” comes in and honestly this was one of our favorites. It keeps that same gentle mood but adds a bit more personality. There’s something in the way it moves, like it’s telling a small story without words. It doesn’t rush and that’s probably why it works so well.

One thing that stands out across the whole album is the sound design, especially on “Tanworth-in-Arden”. There’s a lot of detail in how everything sounds. It’s still just guitar at the core, but the tones, the space, the feeling… it all feels very carefully done. Not overdone, just right.

This is a 10-track album, and it really feels like a journey into her style and skills. Not in a flashy way but more like a slow walk where you notice new things as you go. Some tracks feel a bit brighter, others more reflective, but it all connects nicely without feeling forced.

There’s also a deeper meaning behind the album. It reflects her personal journey, especially her transition and finding herself after a long time. You can feel that emotion in the music, even if there are no lyrics. It adds weight to the listening experience, but it never becomes too heavy. What we liked most is how easy this album is to live with. You can play it in the background while relaxing, studying, or just doing nothing, and it works. But if you actually sit down and listen closely, there’s a lot going on too. That balance is not easy to get right.

Her guitar work is clearly on a high level. You can hear the passion and also the control. She knows what she’s doing, and she’s been doing it for a long time. The quality of the music is honestly impressive and it doesn’t feel like she’s trying to prove anything anymore. It just flows. If we’re being honest, this is the kind of album that grows on you. First listen is nice, second is better, and after that you start picking favorite moments without even noticing.

Overall, we really enjoyed this one. It’s calm, unique, and full of small details that make it special. We’d definitely like to hear more from her this year, because this feels like an artist who still has a lot to give.
