Evan Saukam released a new single called “APSARA” from his EP “ALLAMERICANVERMIN“, and it’s one of those tracks that doesn’t really try to grab you fast. It just kind of sits there at first, then slowly gets heavier without making a big deal out of it.
The sound is haunting. There’s a lot of space in the track, but it never sounds or feels empty. The drum beats are amazing. Even when things stay simple, it still sounds full and heavy. Not in a big or loud way… more like something sitting in the background but still hard to ignore.
The story behind it adds a lot. The song is tied to his great grandmother, who was a victim of the Cambodian genocide, and that alone already shifts how you hear everything. Then there’s this memory he talks about, seeing a ghost-like woman when he was a baby. It sounds strange, maybe even unreal, but it connects to the mood of the track in a way that’s hard to explain properly.
What’s interesting is how fast the song came together. He said it just came out of him after a moment in New York, and you can kind of hear that. It doesn’t sound overworked. It’s rough in places, but that actually helps. Evan Saukam doesn’t want to sound like everyone else. The track doesn’t follow a clear structure and it doesn’t try to be easy either. Some parts are simple, some parts hit harder and it just moves between them perfectly.
We like how this one stays with you a bit after it ends. Not because it’s loud or catchy, but because it leaves something behind and that’s enough for us.
