The Victim – This Town

Not every artist follows up a praised debut with something bigger. Sometimes they go narrower. That’s what happens here. The Victim’s new single “This Town” opens the door to the upcoming album Homebound, and it doesn’t rush to impress. It just stands there. The song looks at small-town life without drama, without shouting. Just truth. Dreams fading. Streets getting quieter. People staying even when they want to leave.

The writing is sharp. Honest. Kenneth Nefling has a real sense for detail, and it shows. You can tell he knows these places. The storytelling feels lived-in, not imagined. There’s a weight to the words, but it never turns heavy for the sake of it.

Vocals? Raw. Drums? Strong. Instrumentation? Rich. Melodies? Catchy.

The production is balanced and lets everything breathe. It sits somewhere between folk and americana, with a subtle nod to classic heartland rock, but it doesn’t try to copy anyone. It sounds like someone choosing restraint on purpose.

It’s also the start of a new chapter. The decision to release the music outside Spotify says something about where he stands and what he values. That choice adds context, but the song works on its own. We think “This Town” shows growth. Not louder. Just clearer. And honestly, we’re curious to hear the full Homebound project now.

ABOUT THE ARTIST:

Danish singer/songwriter based in Copenhagen.

Behind the name “The Victim” you find the Danish singer and songwriter Kenneth Nefling, who since 2014 has played both small and large stages.

Prior to that, Kenneth Nefling had performed in various bands, where he had served as lead singer and guitarist, but when he wrote the song “All I See…” in 2013 and introduced the song for his then band, he could feel that he was in a time of change where inspiration led him away from the alternative rock that up to that point had dominated the musical expression.

After surrendering to the newly found inspiration, songwriting began to take off, and soon there were enough songs to go out and do concerts. But before that Kenneth Nefling went to Aarhus to record a few demos with producer and guitarist Søren Zahle (Peter Sommer, Jacob Dinesen and others).

Kenneth Nefling could not afford a hotel room and therefore spent the night on the floor in the studio.

Alone with an entire studio as a bedroom, he used the inspirational surroundings to find his artist name.

Kenneth Nefling had for a long time been a fan of the Las Vegas based band The Killers and their fan group is called The Victims. So out of it, mixed with the context that the songs Kenneth Nefling writes, most often are sad and self-sacrificing, the artist’s name ended up being ‘The Victim’.

After being in Aarhus to find both the artist’s name and the artistic expression, Kenneth Nefling turned to the Copenhagen producer Peter Brander, who has produced a countless amount of remarkable records since the 1970’s. Kenneth Nefling started by recording the single “California” in Peter Brander’s studio, Media Sound.

When “California” was released in late 2015, there was also a music video, but to start with, the attention was missing out. A few months later, Kenneth Nefling sent the single to the Danish radio host, Alex Nyborg Madsen, who is known for having a finger on the pulse and being good at giving new artists a chance. That should prove to be a good idea.

Alex Nyborg Madsen chose to play “California” several times on the national radio channel P4. It ignited a spark in Kenneth Nefling and he started working on an EP to be produced in Media Sound, but before that The Victim was invited to Ireland to warm up for musician Rob Strong (father of Andrew Strong). Together they went to several venues and pubs, where The Victim had the opportunity to try out the songs for an English-speaking audience. The songs were well received with the Irish, and The Victim got compared to Ed Sheeran and David Gray. During the week when Kenneth Nefling was in Ireland, he also lived with the Strong family, where he received a lot of advice on his songs.

After the tour, Kenneth Nefling returned to the studio to continue with his EP.

During the recordings, Kenneth Nefling built up a close friendship with Peter Brander’s assistant, Anders Overgaard, who was also a part of the “California” single. Anders Overgaard became a bigger part of the recordings and he and Kenneth Nefling worked on the EP as soon as the studio was empty.

It took just over a year and a half to make the EP, which should contain six tracks. Shortly before the EP was finished, The Victim was booked to perform his song “All I See…” for a wedding proposal at Copenhagen Airport. The proposal was filmed and used as an advertisement for the airport, which went viral on social media, where it was briefly seen by over a million Danes. When the debut “Letting Go” was completed in 2017, Kenneth Nefling sent all the songs to Alex Nyborg Madsen, who proved to be enthusiastic and played four of the EP’s six tracks in his program on P4.

In the summer of 2018, on his 28th birthday, Kenneth Nefling had been invited to play at a venue in Frederiksvaerk, which is owned by Alex Nyborg Madsen.

In the meantime, it went downhill with the songwriting. Kenneth Nefling experienced a pure writing blockade which ended up causing him to sell his guitar.
But already the day after Kenneth Nefling put his guitar up for sale, an email from Michael H. Andersen, owner of the record company Target Records, appeared. Kenneth Nefling signed a record deal with Target Records, and all of a sudden the writing block stopped. At the end of 2018, Kenneth Nefling began recording the sequel to “Letting Go” with Anders Overgaard, who now had his own studio. The first single “Go With Your Heart Open” became The Victim’s biggest radio success to date, with over 100 plays during the last half of 2019.

A few months after the release of “Go With Your Heart Open”, The Victim appeared at that year’s Tønder Festival, where he had been allowed to play two concerts. The rest of the fall he focused on completing the EP, so only a few concerts were played to test new material.

On February 28, 2020, the EP “When Everything Is Over (part one)” was released with five quite different songs, all of which constitute a larger sound universe than “Letting Go”.

The EP was well received scoring 5/5 from the Swedish music blog Rockfarbror.se and 4.5/5 from the Danish music blog Side 33.

After the release of “When Everything Is Over (part one), Kenneth Nefling had a busy year with shows around Denmark.

In 2022 Kenneth Nefling parted ways with Target Records, to head back to be an independent artist. The first single ‘The Victim’ released after the split with the record label was “Ghost House”, which was released in 2022. “Ghost House” became the most played song by The Victim on Danish radio, reaching radio rotation. The following years, once again, The Victim laid low, being quiet for a couple of years, until the release of “When Everything Is Over (part two)”, which was released in 2024. 2024 would become the most productive year for The Victim, releasing two EP’s. Besides “When Everything Is Over (part two)”, Kenneth Nefling chose to re-record his first EP “Letting Go” to show a more mature and self confident artist. The EP was recorded in Kenneth Neflings home, with himself recording every instrument. That would end up becoming a game changing choice.

Later in 2024 Kenneth Nefling startet recording a few singles in his home. The songs “Walls” and “Get Back On Your Feet” were released as singles in 2024. In early January 2025 Kenneth Nefling had finished the debut album of The Victim titled “Heartaches and Lows”. The third single from the album was titled “All Your Friends” and was released in March 2025.
