Some records don’t need to shout to grab you. Sophie Penman’s new single, “Albert Street” is one of those songs that quietly pulls you in, then suddenly you’re hitting replay without really thinking about it.
The instrumental is the first thing that lands. It’s warm and puts us in a good mood. Her voice is soft and honestly just lovely to listen to. There’s something very natural about how she delivers each line. The melody sticks with you too, simple but strong, and it carries the song in a really calm and confident way.
The songwriting is honest. You can hear that this comes from a real place, not something rushed or overworked. The instrumental stays gentle and well balanced, letting her voice sit right where it should. Piano, subtle rhythm, space to breathe. The mix is clean and gives everything room, which makes the song feel intimate and simple.
What we really enjoyed is the raw but catchy feel of it all. It sounds carefully made, but not polished to the point of losing its heart. There’s emotion here, but it’s handled with restraint, and that makes it hit harder. This song is memorable in the best way. We loved this release, and it left us wanting to hear what she does next.
ABOUT THE ARTIST:
Sophie Penman is a 26-year-old multi-instrumentalist and singer-songwriter from Scotland, her songwriting, piano and guitar styles informed by the likes of Eva Cassidy, Norah Jones and Bonnie Raitt. Her music is a blend of catchy melodies, emotive lyrics and soulful harmonies. Trained as a classical violinist and singer, she also draws on influences from classical music and stays true to her roots through Scottish folk influences.
Sophie has played across the country and abroad, with highlights including The Pheasantry in London, BBC 4 Loose Ends Live in Stirling, Perth Festival of the Arts, Aberdeen True North Sessions, the Edinburgh Castle and MiCannes in Cannes, France. Sophie released her debut album ‘Written in the Books’ with Metro 13 Records in Edinburgh in 2023 and is now based Glasgow, where she is working towards the release of her new song “Albert Street” and receiving mentorship through the Hen Hoose musicians collective.
