Sketches of Carol – People I Don’t Know

Sketches of Carol, the musical project by vocalist and composer Sylvia Schmidt is back with a haunting new single titled “People I Don’t Know”. She is one of our favorite artists, known for her emotional honesty and minimal sound. Carol once again proves her gift for translating real-life moments into music that touches the soul.

This new track was inspired by her experience at the funeral of a young woman she had only met once. That small distance allowed her to observe the day with a different lens, feeling the sorrow, connection and quiet strength among people who didn’t all know each other. The song follows this unique perspective, beginning in a pub filled with awkward introductions and soft laughter and ending in a quiet church lit by candles and united voices.

The instrumentation is simple but powerful with Carol’s signature ethereal vocals layered in delicate harmonies. Stephanie Tress’s cello adds depth and warmth in the second half, gently guiding listeners into the emotional weight of the moment. The track is beautifully mixed and produced, keeping the raw emotion intact while adding subtle textures throughout.

We love how the song captures such a deeply personal experience, one we all go through, even if from the sidelines. There’s a quiet strength in this release that moved us. From the melodies to the message, “People I Don’t Know” is a beautiful reminder of how even in grief and connection can bloom. We think this is one of Sketches of Carol’s most touching works yet.

ABOUT THE ARTIST:

Sketches of Carol is the solo project of vocalist and composer Sylvia Schmidt. The project is defined by an instinctive improvisatory approach, which Schmidt describes as the ‘most pure, raw form of [her] creative being’. Her strikingly haunting melodies carry the emotional weight of a rich thematic context: environmental preservation, women’s and migrant rights, shared grief, human connection and community.
