Scott Candlish, the indie folk singer-songwriter, has just released his latest single, “New Day”. This marks his third release following the melancholic tracks ‘Forever in the Dark’ and ‘Blue’. While the earlier singles explored deeper and darker elements of helplessness, ‘New Day’ references hitting rock bottom while offering small glimmers of hope. Sonically, the single showcases familiar acoustic fingerstyle and usual harmony layering in a unique, upbeat fashion.
Candlish’s music has always been characterized by his introspective lyrics and delicate guitar work. His previous releases have touched upon themes of heartbreak, loss, and the struggle to find meaning in the face of adversity. However, with ‘New Day’, Candlish seems to be exploring a new chapter in his musical journey.
The opening chords of ‘New Day’ immediately set the tone for the track. The acoustic guitar is bright and optimistic, in contrast to the darker tones of his earlier work. Candlish’s signature fingerstyle is present, but this time he has added a layer of upbeat energy to his playing. The song’s rhythm is infectious, and it’s hard not to tap your foot along to the beat.
Lyrically, ‘New Day’ is a departure from his earlier work. While ‘Forever in the Dark’ and ‘Blue’ dealt with themes of isolation and despair, ‘New Day’ offers small glimmers of hope. The song references hitting rock bottom, but it also acknowledges that there is a way out. The chorus of ‘New Day’ is particularly uplifting. The melody is catchy and feels like a breath of fresh air. It’s clear that Candlish is trying to convey a message of positivity and hope with this track.
Overall, ‘New Day’ is a welcome departure from Candlish’s earlier work. While his melancholic tracks were beautiful in their own right, ‘New Day’ shows that Candlish is capable of exploring new territory and experimenting with different sounds.
