Q: Welcome back, mumdeathcake! It’s fantastic to have you with us again. Since our last conversation, a lot has happened in your musical journey. To kick things off, could you share some highlights or pivotal moments that have shaped your artistic path since our last interview?
A: Apart from becoming concerningly obsessed with Bloons TD6 playthroughs on YouTube, I released my second EP ‘Marigold’ in November of 2025 which was really an experiment in songwriting, touched on alot of new vibes so that was alot of fun. And since then I’ve been working on my production pretty heavily in an effort to expand mumdeathcake into new textures and soundscapes in 2026.
Q: Can you describe the musical style of mumdeathcake in three words?
A: “Almost Garage Slowcore”
Q: How do you stay connected with your fans, and what role do they play in shaping your musical journey?
A: Honestly, I’m really bad at social media and I kinda wish it wasn’t a requirement to be a musician nowadays, so I’m not the best tbh. But I really try and be authentic and keep it about the art (and my Bloons TD6 addiction). I feel like there’s a real pressure to just shove content down your fans’ throats until they’re stuffed silly, and I really wanna avoid that. I get a few people who dig my music reaching out in DMs to say “hi” and I’m still not really used to that, that being said it’s a pretty rad feeling.
Q: You have just released your new single, ‘billy no mates’. Is there a story behind it?
A: The first song ‘billy no mates’ is a bit of a character study, looking back at myself when I first moved out of home, the instability that came with that and the unhealthy coping mechanisms that came about as a result. It’s sort of a conversation with my younger self, really what I wish someone could have told me back then when I was deep in it y’know?
The Second song ‘dossier’ is about giving yourself up completely to someone and learning to be comfortable with sharing every part of yourself with them. It’s a super vulnerable position to be in, but under the right circumstances and with the right person, it can be the most freeing thing in the world.
Q: What is your favorite verse or part of the song and why?
A: Since I wrote the lyrics down in my notes app on my phone at work, the chorus of ‘billy no mates’ has really stuck with me. It’s like a brutal friend telling you to get your shit together and I think that’s kinda cool.
Q: Can you walk us through the creative process of producing the song, “billy no mates”?
A: So ‘billy no mates’ started as the chorus lyrics in my notes app on my phone at work. That same day I drove home for lunch, smashed a wrap and fiddled around on guitar for 10 minutes, just trying to put the lyrics to a progression. I quickly recorded it into my voice memos before I had to run back to work. It sat on my phone for about a week before I remembered it and it just sort of flowed from there.
Q: Are there any plans to bring mumdeathcake to the stage?
A: I’ve had a couple of rehearsals with some really close friends of mine and we’re working towards getting mumdeathcake on stage later in 2026. Fronting a band behind a screen us a bit easier than doing it on a stage. It’s scary as shit but that’s why it feels like it’s the the right next step for mumdeathcake.
Q: Reflecting on your dual single, each song holding its unique significance, could you share a particular track that stands out to you personally? What makes that specific tune special, and why does it hold a place of pride in your musical journey?
A: ‘dossier’ was the first track i started writing for this phase of mumdeathcake and it really set the vibe for this new EP. I went into it with no expectations and kind of threw my rules for songwriting out the window and that was super freeing. It feels like the first step in the next iteration of this project, and that’s super special to me.
Q: Exploring the diverse creative processes within the music industry is always fascinating. Could you provide insight into mumdeathcake’s unique approach to crafting music? From the initial spark of an idea to the finished song, how do you navigate the creative journey and bring its musical concepts to life?
A: I used to always worry whether I was writing a song “the right way”. But since the first EP I’ve let myself become alot more loose with my process, sometimes an idea starts from a drum loop, a guitar riff, or some lyrics in my notes app. But when it comes to fully realising those ideas, I always focus on the space and texture first. I feel like that always tells me where a song needs to go.
Q: As we wrap up our conversation, looking ahead, what aspirations or dreams do you have, and what message would you like to share with your fans as they continue to accompany you on this musical journey?
A: I aspire to stop spending so much time watching Bloons TD6 videos on YouTube and spend more time bringing mumdeathcake to the stage. As far as a message goes, support your local art scene, whether it’s your friends making beats or someone you knew from highschool starting a painting instagram. That stuff goes a long way.
