Q: Welcome back, Fonto! It’s fantastic to have you with us again. Since our last conversation, a lot has happened in your musical journey. To kick things off, could you share some highlights or pivotal moments that have shaped your artistic path since our last interview?
A: I’ve been hard at work since we last spoke on my new album GREED which is a fusion of alternative electronic and hip hop fused with rock and lo-fi pop. I hope the audience enjoys the new sound and the work I have put into finding my voice this past year.
Q: Can you describe the musical style of Fonto in three words?
A: Rap/Electronic/Meaningful
Q: How do you stay connected with your fans, and what role do they play in shaping your musical journey?
A: I watch very carefully what my fans respond to when I release new music and it plays a huge role in determining the next steps, the music I will produce videos for and the ones to perform live.
Q: You have just released your new album, ‘Greed’. Is there a story behind it?
A: It’s a commentary on the hyper-focus of our society on money and means, the constant daily drum beat of trying to make and earn money, the struggles to survive in this world.
Q: What is your favorite track from the album and why?
A: That’s a tough question, but I like the vocal layering in OFF THE RADAR and I like the overall mix and mood of GET IT DONE, which the audience seems to like the best as well.
Q: Can you walk us through the creative process of producing the album, “Greed”?
A: It took over a year to write, record, mix and master the album, and the mood of the album reflects a growing experimentation by me in terms of the writing and the choices of music. I think musically, I am still searching and combining styles I like. For writing, I usually get in my vibe and write out my lyrics in a notebook when I am most relaxed at home, just smoking and writing. I find inspiration from my girlfriend, my family and problems I may go through in my life. It helps to process things to write the songs.
Q: What has been the most memorable concert or performance for Fonto so far?
A: I really enjoy doing smaller performances in New York and really getting in touch with the audiences from all around the world. One night I met a group of Russian students who really liked my music, and it reminded me how we are all so similar, despite language and cultural barriers. That is why the album name GREED is in Russian Cyrillic on Soundcloud.
Q: Reflecting on your body of work, each song holding its unique significance, could you share a particular track that stands out to you personally? What makes that specific tune special, and why does it hold a place of pride in your musical journey?
A: I’d have to say I am most proud of my work with Sofaygo, including TRUST NOBODY, because I saw something in him just before he began his meteoric rise and it was a good experience to perform on several songs with him and coordinate our music.
Q: Exploring the diverse creative processes within the music industry is always fascinating. Could you provide insight into Fonto’s unique approach to crafting music? From the initial spark of an idea to the finished song, how do you navigate the creative journey and bring its musical concepts to life?
A: I always write lyrics first, exploring the themes of my life at the moment. Then I study music out there, choose what appeals to me, then gather and work on beats in various styles, and then experiment with performance. This is the beauty of having a home studio, because I can take more time choosing the way a song will develop. Working with Chris Marcel, my engineer has been a true blessing. Find the right people to work with!
Q: As we wrap up our conversation, looking ahead, what aspirations or dreams do you have for Fonto, and what message would you like to share with your fans as they continue to accompany you on this musical journey?
A: My biggest goals at the moment are to upgrade my music videos to a more cinematic feel and to do more live performances with other musicians who I admire. I am working hard on a new album and some new collaborations right now. Stay patient and focused on the work, and remember that you have to love this work to do it. Don’t give up!
