“What Killed the Sun” is the latest release of mumdeathcake and it is a powerful and gripping track that captures a unique blend of darkness and depth. It’s only his second single and it’s obvious that Darcy Eddy is not afraid to push boundaries and dive deep into personal and emotional spaces.
The production is creative, polished and creates a haunting atmosphere. The instrumentation is both heavy and memorable and the laid-back and dreamy vocals are just as appropriate. The track has a very cinematic feel to it, with sudden changes between raw climaxes and atmospheric soundscapes. It feels like controlled chaos, which mirrors the song’s themes of hopeless rumination and the struggle to cope with uncontrollable circumstances.
Darcy Eddy, the artist behind mumdeathcake, explained that the comic was created during one of the worst times in his life, the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. The song is about sorrow, loneliness, and despair, but recording it has helped him to come to terms with the situation. He is completely open and sincere in the song and that is why the song is so realistic and touching.
This song is much darker and heavier than his first single “Black Eyed Susan”. It’s the darkest track on his upcoming EP, “The Big Slow” which adds a layer of contrast to the project as a whole. The message of the song is honest and meaningful, touching upon the issues of self-destructive behavior and the lack of self-care, which makes the listener think.
We find this track to be incredibly powerful. It’s not just music, it’s an experience. The haunting vocals, the creative production, and the honest lyrics are all captivating, and the emotion that is put into the song sticks with you long after it ends. mumdeathcake has proven that he’s a force to be reckoned with, and we’re excited to see how the rest of his EP unfolds. This single is a must-listen for fans of music that isn’t afraid to embrace the darker side of the human experience.
