Limerick-based duo Japanese Jesus has recently released their latest single, “Depression Breakfast.” This new track is the second single and title track from their upcoming five-track EP, set to release in June this year in digital and vinyl formats. The single is available on all major streaming platforms since May 5.
“Depression Breakfast” was recorded by Mike Gavin/Ben Wanders, mastered by Richard Dowling, and features artwork by Dan Holloway. With their new single, Japanese Jesus continues to establish themselves as one of Ireland’s most exciting alternative acts, and their upcoming EP promises to be a fresh and innovative addition to the Irish music scene.
Following their previous single, “Tension,” the new release, “Depression Breakfast,” offers a slightly less aggressive sound, with a heavier yet melodic slant, reminiscent of Pixies and 90s US alternative rock bands such as Slint. The echoing backing vocals add an extra dimension to the track, evoking a sense of nostalgia for fans of REM, Idlewild, and Teenage Fanclub.
Japanese Jesus comprises Bertie Kelly, who takes on vocals, guitars, and bass, and Denny Dunworth, who plays drums. Both members hail from County Limerick, Ireland. The duo previously performed under the moniker Supermodel Twins in the early 2000s, releasing their debut album with Noel Hogan of The Cranberries on production duties. However, their current sound leans more towards alternative and punk genres. Their debut single, “Facilities,” was warmly received and recorded by Mike Gavin of Windings and The Cranberries, with mastering by Richard Dowling, who has previously worked with Foo Fighters, David Bowie, and Brian Eno. They have since released four more singles, including “Progress,” “Liver,” “Bus Weirdo,” and “Tension.”
Japanese Jesus is a professional duo and their music is different and deserves to be heard by all people around the world. With their unique blend of sounds and influences, Japanese Jesus is quickly gaining a reputation as one of Ireland’s most exciting alternative acts. Fans eagerly anticipate the release of their upcoming EP, which promises to be a fresh and innovative addition to the Irish music scene.
