Jangus Kangus – Janakita Kirakita

Los Angeles-based independent musician Jasmine Sankaran aka Jangus Kangus has delivered something special with her latest single, “Janakita Kirakita”. This track is the third single from her upcoming debut studio album Fortune Cookie, and it brings a fresh and distinctive sound that sets her apart in the indie music scene.

The song dives into the hidden darkness of suburban California, weaving brief yet compelling stories through the lens of classical Indian dance music. This unique fusion of influences makes “Janakita Kirakita” an exciting listen, blending raw garage surf with tuneful, punk-infused energy.

One of the standout elements of this track is the instrumentation. It captures an electrifying energy with Kevin Nash’s ripping guitar and the powerhouse rhythm section of Dan Perdomo and Tristan Starr. The roaring guitar work adds a dynamic intensity that keeps the song engaging from start to finish.

We love her style and the captivating way she delivers her music. Her voice stands out and the band’s chemistry is undeniable. The production on this track is sharp and every instrument feels perfectly placed. The guitar work, especially, is a highlight, it’s powerful, intricate, and full of life. Jangus Kangus deserves way more attention and we can’t wait to see where her journey takes her next.

ABOUT THE ARTIST:

Jangus Kangus is the stage name of Jasmine Sankaran, a Los Angeles-based independent musician known for her eclectic blend of indie, punk, and synth-pop.

Raised in Ventura County, California in an Indian-Vietnamese multiracial household, she began writing songs as a teenager, compelled by the neighboring LA indie rock scene and a closed-down-Borders-Bookstore-turned DIY concert venue.

She went on to study poetry and writing at UC Berkeley before returning to Los Angeles and to perform her collaborations with producer Josiah Mazzaschi (Light FM, Child Seat). Pursuing her new band’s raw, experimental punk sound, she went on to create a several DIY records, including 2019’s Interesting Times which included the feminist hit “Cactus,” all the while gathering a following in the underground punk scene. In 2023 she returned to the studio under the guidance of Moosecat Recording’s Mike Post (Young Creatures, Carly and the Universe) to record Fortune Cookie, her most personal and ambitious full-band effort yet. Featuring a sweeter, psych-inspired sound, Fortune Cookie explores romance, heartache, and what it means to be perceived as an outsider in the place you grew up.

Jangus Kangus has shared the stage with buzzworthy acts such as Holy Wars, Hana Vu, Bibiloteka, and Guppy. Her music has received airplay on KXLU, KALX, KPSC, Radio K Minnesota, and KDVS. The current lineup includes Dan Perdomo (drums), Antonio White (lead guitar), Stephanie Anderson (vocals and keys), and Ryan Kellis (bass).
