Interview With Yung Oprah

Q: Can you tell us a bit about yourself and how your childhood impacted your musical direction?

A: I was lucky enough to be around music my whole life. I just had trouble expressing the direction I wanted to take with it. I grew up in a very musical family. I was always around gatherings and parties as a child so music and dance have played a big part in my coming of age. (Alexandre)

To be 100% honest I have tried to figure out how to record music on every medium I possibly could starting with my friends hi-fi system. If someone had a dictaphone I’d try that. At my secondary school they had these old atari computers with cubase 1 on them. They were old AF but, the school couldn’t afford new ones. I think they were a donation from a charity in the 80s’ or something. I spent most of my free time in the music department on the drumkit. I was always on the lookout for some kind of tape deck or basic mic recorder until my parents got me my own apple imac computer when I was 18. Then I started making beats properly. I still use tapes in my production to this day. (Lester)

Q: How are you planning on growing your fan base and sharing your music with the world? What message do you have for anyone who is about to discover “Yung Oprah”?

A: In this digital age of instant gassy music, we’re choosing to explore marketing our music through varies means. Online and social media being prime. We also look towards song releases and eventually catch the ears of all the cold wave, dark wave, EBM & post punk disc jockeys on platforms like Spotify to get noticed via playlists. Performing live is always a great sensation compared to non of the above. So hitting the live circuit and touring when we have the bookings is also something we’re looking into at the moment. Ultimately networking with other artists and also personnel working within the industry always helps. You know making friends is always the way forward. The world needs more love and connections.

We want to bring back good old melancholic romantic songs that live in the hearts of all goths worldwide. (Alexandre)

Q: Who is the most inspiring artist for you right now? And where do you find inspiration for making music?

A: Not gonna lie I’ve been bumping Type O Negative A LOT! Lately. Other than that its usually Hardcore Punk and metal for me personally.

My most recently played list is literally – Obituary, Ozzy osbourne, Type O Negative, Skeletal Remains, Powertrip, Goatwhore, etc etc etc. I listen to very little “Darkwave” or “EMB” but, I feel like Metal combined with Techno kind of gets you there the long way round. (Lester)

At the moment the most inspiring artist for me is The Garden a band out of California USA. I think they’re simply great and have a plethora of material that’s different and experimental I like hearing music in ways I have yet to experience.

Inspiration can be found everywhere. I’m inspired by life, spirituality, romantic relationships and try to write songs about everything and anything and make those moments human so they can be digest in a way that doesn’t say fantasy and sci-fi but, ultra realism and can provoke social discussions amongst young and mature entertainment goers.(Alexandre)

Q: Can you tell us about the story or message behind the EP, “Love Me When I’m Dead.”?

A: Love Me When I’m Dead happened in the mist of Covid-19. It was a very dark time for us. A lot of sorrow and reminiscing of ways that use to be. It was all about realising how much you miss something when you no longer have the ability to engage with it you know. I wanted to speak about my thoughts on monotheism, anxiety and love for all that is grimoire in the most nocturnal way possible.  (Alexandre)

Q: How would you describe your sound in one word for potential listeners?

A: Inter-Dimensional Noise Culture. Not one word but that’s my description for now. It may change in the future. Future me will revisit this response. (Alexandre)

Q: Did you face any challenges while writing or recording “Love Me When I’m Dead”?

A: Yes a lot. It was truest difficult. Writing songs in the dark and also recording in the dark. As we couldn’t meet at a studio space as everything was closed because, of quarantine. We faced many hurdles that actually helped us innovate our sound direction forever. (Alexandre)

Q: What is the message of your music? And what are your goals as an artist?

A: I just want to get everyone to dance again at gigs. Get lost in the moment find their eusexua and express through the vibrations. (Alexandre)

Q: Who is your dream artist to collaborate with? (dead or alive)

A: I’d love to make a song with 2pac, Kurt Cobain and GG Allin(Alexandre)

Q: What is your advice for people interested in pursuing music as a career or for those trying to enter the industry?

A: Do what you truly love. Express your true self. Don’t do anything you don’t want to do. (Lester)

Do whatever you like. (Alexandre)

Q: If you could go back in time and give a younger you some words of wisdom, what would they be?

A: Embrace your goth. (Alexandre)
