Interview With The Glasgow Iliad

Q: Can you tell us a bit about yourself and how your childhood impacted your musical direction?

A: All my music influences came pretty much from my parents. The Clash, Lou Reed, Talking Heads. I was also heavily influenced by 90’s pop and RnB. Mix that in with acoustic artists like Jack Johnson and José Gonzalez and there you go.

Q: How are you planning on growing your fan base and sharing your music with the world? What message do you have for anyone who is about to discover “The Glasgow Iliad”?

A: Apart from shouting ‘listen to my tunes!’ in the middle of George Square, social media probably, it’s a brave new world.

Q: Who is the most inspiring artist for you right now? And where do you find inspiration for making music?

A: Bee Asha. The inspiration for the music comes to you, you don’t find it. It’s like someone drops a musical stone into my pond brain and sets the ripples off, from that point it’s about not messing up the original idea.

Q: Can you tell us about the story or message behind the song, “Window.”?

A: It’s about hopelessness. When you’re at your lowest, the window is your eyes. No matter what, there’s a crack in your outlook on the world. It’s a horrible place to be and I don’t wish it on my worst enemy

Q: How would you describe your sound in one word for potential listeners?

A: Naked

Q: Did you face any challenges while writing or recording “Window”?

A: Yes, my dad playing the violin on the track, that was a challenge. I recorded the piano without a click and he hadn’t played the violin for a while so finding the notes and getting a good enough take was challenging. We came up with the idea to tune the strings to the correct note and play the violin string open, hey presto, got it first take.

Q: What is the message of your music? And what are your goals as an artist?

A: Honesty, vulnerability, those were definitely the themes behind the EP ‘Good Grief! Maybe the message will change with the music but for now honestly and vulnerability.

Q: Who is your dream artist to collaborate with? (dead or alive)

A: Bee Asha

Q: What is your advice for people interested in pursuing music as a career or for those trying to enter the industry?

A: I’m lucky to be working part time in what my granny would call a ‘proper job’ that helps a lot obviously. Not just music, but whatever your passion or dream is, balance is the key. You need to prioritise family and friends, if you’ve got good people around you the sky’s the limit.

Q: If you could go back in time and give a younger you some words of wisdom, what would they be?

A: Nothing, he turns out no bad. I’d tell him to buy bitcoin though.
