Interview With Scared of Sharks

Q: Can you tell us a bit about yourself and how your childhood impacted your musical direction?

A: I grew up on the far south coast of Australia in a small place called Mogareeka before moving to Wollongong where I met the rest of the band around the city at local gigs and parties.

My musical direction was heavily influenced by my parents. My dad had a massive record collection covering just about every genre under the sun that I’d always search through and pick albums to play. Although as I got older I found out all my favourite albums and artists that i had selected (The Clash, The Saints ect…) were mum’s.

Q: How are you planning on growing your fan base and sharing your music with the world? What message do you have for anyone who is about to discover “Scared of Sharks”?

A: We’ve got a bunch of music recorded that we’re planning on releasing throughout the rest of the year, With our next single coming out in April and an EP before the end of the year. We’ll be playing shows and touring in support for those.

Q: Who is the most inspiring artist for you right now? And where do you find inspiration for making music?

A: I really loved C.O.F.F.I.N.’s album “Australia stops” that came out last year. And I guess I get inspiration from everything and nothing really…

Q: Can you tell us about the story or message behind the song, “Ode to Rose St..”?

A: I wrote Ode to Rose St. in 2019 about a share house that Tim, I, 4 other boys and plenty of drop-ins lived in a frequented. I broke my leg early in the year, so for a good two months I was perched up on the couch just watching the comings and goings of the place and the song came from that.

Q: How would you describe your sound in one word for potential listeners?

A: Gravel

Q: Did you face any challenges while writing or recording “Ode to Rose St.”?

A: Nah it was all pretty straightforward. We recorded it over a couple of sessions at noise machine studios with producer Radi Safi, he wanted us to experiment & try out a few different ideas, but in the end we decided to just played it straight.

Q: What is the message of your music? And what are your goals as an artist?

A: I wouldn’t say we have any overarching messages in our music and for our goals… probably just to achieve as much as possible whilst having as much fun as possible.

Q: Who is your dream artist to collaborate with? (dead or alive)

A: Would be cool to have Tom Waits sing one of my songs.

Q: What is your advice for people interested in pursuing music as a career or for those trying to enter the industry?

A: It ain’t free and it don’t pay well haha.

Q: If you could go back in time and give a younger you some words of wisdom, what would they be?

A: Watch out where the husky’s go and don’t you eat that yellow snow.
