Interview With REDRUM

Q: Can you tell us a bit about yourself and how your childhood impacted your musical direction?

A: I loved my childhood, it has impacted my music in such a positive way. I grew up on a typical council estate in South East London, I was a free spirited child who was very observant with the people around me as I had to be cautious, even at a young age I knew something was up with the energy around me, there was allot of drug abuse, mental health issues, poverty but within it all was still something beautiful we were all like a big family who supported one another. Allot of my music has a hint of political consciousness and this is what I believe makes me different, I like to turn the negatives into positives.

Q: How are you planning on growing your fan base and sharing your music with the world? What message do you have for anyone who is about to discover “Redrum”?

A: I’m just going to carry on doing me and if people rate it they rate it and if they don’t they don’t. I have a few projects coming up which are different from any others I’ve done so I am excited for this. Im also due to hop on a few new platforms but I can’t say too much as its top secret at the moment but its going to be HUGE. Hopefully the right people resonate and follow the journey. The message I have for people about to discover me is this years going to be CRAZY you’ve found me at the right time.

Q: Who is the most inspiring artist for you right now? And where do you find inspiration for making music?

A: I have a connection with Green Tea Peng, even though our music genres are completely different I feel her energy and aims through her music, she’s authentic in her looks and personality and I think the industry should take a leaf out of her book and stop trying to mould each artist as the same people, it doesn’t work like that. I’m so big on authenticity and originality so I really do respect her for staying true to her self, real artists like her inspire me to become better and to stay true to myself. I find inspiration in everything, my down days, my good days, people around me, problems my friends are going through- literally anything and everything, I enjoy writing but at my own pace.

Q: Can you tell us about the story or message behind the song, “Freak.”?

A: The song freak is about me, it explains the way I navigate my daily life, ‘’ I creep in the morning and freak in the evening, no sleep for the wicked my dreams need weaving I got money on my mind and I stay up on my grind money what I want money what I need and it got me feeling fine’’ – Reference to me never sleeping on my dreams, I am always on the grind no matter what, I will always find a balance in my life and strive for success, no one will get in the way of this. I add a hint of spirituality as I reference angel numbers and their meanings as I find allot of guidance through numbers, I have been called a weirdo and freak before therefore decided to make a track out of it, find that stuff funny. The track was influenced by the rapper Nines, I wanted to add a vocal hook to show my versatility as an artist and to make the message memorable as it’s catchy.

Q: How would you describe your sound in one word for potential listeners?

A: My sound is versatile, vicious and its part of a new era. – that’s a few words not one sorry

Q: Did you face any challenges while writing or recording “Freak”?

A: I wrote the hook first which I do with most of my tracks, I couldn’t seem to click with the second verse, it took me weeks. And then one day as I was in the shower listening to the instrumental it came to me, I hopped out the shower real quick and wrote the bars in my notes app and then recorded the track a few days later.

Q: What is the message of your music? And what are your goals as an artist?

A: I just want other artists to know their worth. You have a dream for a reason so don’t stop until you get there, the journey is the best part so enjoy the highs AND the lows, it will create resilience. You’re going to meet some dickheads along the way and that’s normal but keep going, if you don’t believe in your craft then who will? Take every opportunity you can and step outside your comfort zone it’s the only way you will grow and succeed.  ALSO.. Don’t conform to society, growing up is a trap, do you.

Q: Who is your dream artist to collaborate with? (dead or alive)

A: I would either like to collab with Green Tea Peng, Sasha Keable or Protoje – I love melodic rap so imagining either of these artists on a hook is insane. I love reggae and have always wanted to collab with Protoje, Amy Winehouse of course, she’s one of my biggest inspirations and Tupac… god I have so many

Q: What is your advice for people interested in pursuing music as a career or for those trying to enter the industry?

A: START NOW! Don’t delay in starting something, collab with people, learn from people already in the game, take the highs and lows, don’t get angry or offended with constructive criticism – learn from it. Put out as many tracks as possible even if you think they’re shit, one of them will be a hit. Don’t be lazy.

Q: If you could go back in time and give a younger you some words of wisdom, what would they be?

A: Start those projects NOW, Stop being lazy, focus on the music you have a big talent not allot of people have stop doubting yourself, use it to your advantage. Also.. change your eyebrows they look hideous.
