Q: Can you tell us a bit about yourself and how your childhood impacted your musical direction?
A: I’m Mimika! I’m an orchestral pop artist from just outside of Toronto, Ontario. I grew up on a farm, surrounded by music and with little else to do but dream and be imaginative. I think having so much freedom to create and express myself as a kid led me to crave a lifetime of doing that.
Q: How are you planning on growing your fan base and sharing your music with the world? What message do you have for anyone who is about to discover “Mimika”?
A: I’m kind of taking an ‘attack on all fronts’ approach. I’m playing live shows, I’m showing up on tiktok, instagram, and youtube. I’m going to other people’s shows and supporting the community and overall just trying to enjoy myself while encouraging others to enjoy my music too!
Q: Who is the most inspiring artist for you right now? And where do you find inspiration for making music?
A: I’m currently loving Olivia Dean! I think her music is incredible, and everything about her brand is wrapped up in such a perfect bow. The live show, the outfits, the videos. I find inspiration everywhere! Books, movies, TV shows, and conversations with friends. I really love old school movies and musicals so I tend to pull a lot of inspiration from that.
Q: Can you tell us about the story or message behind the song, “Interesting Things.”?
A: Interesting Things is all about trying to be a bigger person. I made a promise to myself a few years back to really just focus on myself regardless of what people around me had to say and Interesting Things is my outlook on what that process has been like.
Q: How would you describe your sound in one word for potential listeners?
A: Cinematic
Q: Did you face any challenges while writing or recording “Interesting Things”?
A: We actually had to completely rework this song like 3 times. I knew that it had the potential to be something cheeky but still pointed and I wanted the production to reflect that. My producer, Tim Bongiovanni, is an angel for helping me figure it out.
Q: What is the message of your music? And what are your goals as an artist?
A: The message of my music is to champion stories and creativity. I’m proud of the fact that I think my discography is very thematically wide while still having a strong through line. The topics of my songs range from love, heartbreak, mental health, dreams and so much more but the thing that connects them all is that I’m always trying to tell an honest and compelling story. My goal is to keep doing what I’m doing but on continuously larger scales.
Q: Who is your dream artist to collaborate with? (dead or alive)
A: Such an impossible question! I have three answers all for incredibly different reasons but I would say; Lin-Manuel Miranda, Taylor Swift and Jon Bellion.
Q: What is your advice for people interested in pursuing music as a career or for those trying to enter the industry?
A: I know this is so annoying but it truly does come down to just being you. Spend time alone, figure out what you love and what makes you happy and find a way to build your career with it.
Q: If you could go back in time and give a younger you some words of wisdom, what would they be?
A: Stop fighting tiktok. Embrace the algorithm lol
