Interview With Kayla Diamond

Q: Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your musical journey?

A) As most know, I started off as an artist and was in it for about two years before I started to realize that producing was a lot more fun and fulfilling for me. From there I taught myself how to produce and have been blessed to work on many different artist projects! In 2024 I started Kolossal Records, a JV with Awesome/The Orchard, to help give support to artists that I’m passionate about.

Q: As one of the youngest female producers and label presidents in Canada, do you feel the industry is shifting toward more inclusivity for women in production and executive roles?

A) I do believe that it’s getting better- I was at a Universal camp last year and one of the A&R’s and I were discussing this. He had a great point in saying that it’s not that there is a lack of female producers. It’s that many female producers are hesitant to call themselves “producers” and take sessions because they are scared of judgement from male producers and industry execs. I can attest to this because for the longest time, I was scared of being challenged by male producers as well. Once I started owning the title, I embodied it. I encourage every female producer and exec to lead with confidence even if you don’t believe it yet.

Q: Can you please tell us more about your boutique label, Kolossal Records and the artists you are currently working with?

A) Kolossal is unique in that we only do one artist at a time, and it’s personalized individual development. Right now we are currently developing Amarii, and it’s been incredible to not only be part of his team, but to help him create and be knee deep in it with him from the start. I’m also playing live with him so it’s really fun for me as well to watch that happen and be proud of him like that. I have a lot of love to give, and Kolossal is my outlet for that love.

Q: You’ve built an impressive career as a songwriter, producer, and artist. How do you balance these different roles, and do you have a favorite among them?

A) The favourite role for me will always be the creation process with the artist. Being able to unlock the next level of lyrics, melody and sound alongside the artist in the room is the most exciting and the rest is just a cherry on top!

Q: You are credited for your writing and production work on Dom Vallie’s See You When I See You that was recently nominated for a 2025 JUNO Award. How does it feel to be recognized as a contributor on this project?

A) It feels incredible mostly because of the people I collaborated with. Jorge, Josh and Dom are the most loving, warm and hilarious people and I’m proud to call them my good friends. The best part of a collaboration is the celebration process so I’m extremely grateful to be able to share that with them as well as my business partner, Asim (Awesome) Awan of Awesome Productions and Management, who is responsible for making the introduction between us.

Q: Your work has earned over 60 million cross-platform streams and recognition from major industry figures like Armin Van Buuren and Tiesto. What does that kind of acknowledgment mean to you?

A) It’s really special to me. I just checked this morning and now it’s close to 80 million, which I am incredibly proud of and grateful for every day.

Q: What is your advice for people interested in pursuing producing for those trying to enter the industry?

A) The industry is very small in Canada, so first and foremost your character and how you treat others will determine everything in life. Secondly, remove your ego as much as possible because as a producer, you are there to do whatever’s best for the song and the artist.

Q: If you could go back in time and give a younger you some words of wisdom, what would they be?

A) Trust your gut, Kayla! Also, don’t ever give with the expectation of it being reciprocated- you will be severely let down if you do that.
