Interview With Jordyn Sugar

Q: Can you tell us a bit about yourself and how your childhood impacted your musical direction?

A: I have always been passionate about music, beginning at around 3 years old. I had an electric drum set at home and despite being young I seemed to have a very good sense of time and rhythm. That stuck with me and would continue to pave the way for everything I’m doing now. I started singing at 13 and initially had little confidence in my voice. It was only when I was 16 that I took to social media and quickly shocked everyone around me with a vocal ability that no one knew I had. Other instruments such as piano and guitar always interested me and during the pandemic I had the time and opportunity to sit down and practice. In August 2020, I was recognized by my idol Justin Bieber. Justin had one of my covers to his songs from my TikTok and shared it to his Instagram story. This was a game-changing moment that built up my confidence and essentially launched my career.

Q: How are you planning on growing your fan base and sharing your music with the world? What message do you have for anyone who is about to discover “Jordyn Sugar”?

A: In addition to growing my fan base online through all the usual ways, I am excited about getting out and connecting with my fans at a grass-roots level. My team and I are working on a series of events and tours that will allow me to perform at local venues throughout Canada and the US. It’s so important for me to meet my fans and share my music while growing my fan base organically. I want my fans to be inspired through my story and through my brand “Empowered Pop”. In each of my songs there is a message of empowerment.

Q: Who is the most inspiring artist for you right now? And where do you find inspiration for making music?

A: Hands down Justin Bieber. I remember being 7 years old and going to the “Never Say Never” documentary. I left the theater more inspired than I had ever been. In a word, I felt Empowered, and since that moment I have never given up on myself or my dream. Now I’m living it and was recognized by Justin because I knew that it was possible. The inspiration of creating music comes with the desire to inspire others to go for their dreams, just like I did.

Q: Can you tell us about the story or message behind the song, “Feel the Rush.”?

A: I had the opportunity to write a song for a potential event in New York that I was going to be apart of. They gave me the go ahead to write a theme song that would be upbeat and resonate with the theme of the event. I started brainstorming lyrics and melodies and an hour and a half later “Feel the Rush” was born. There are many references to New York in the chorus “In the city that never sleep” and a line inspired by the 2009 hit song “Empire State of Mind” by Jayz and Alicia Keys “Where dreams are made of”. I see it as another message of personal empowerment. I want people to have fun and tap into their energy and enthusiasm.

Q: How would you describe your sound in one word for potential listeners

A: Empowering

Q: Did you face any challenges while writing or recording “Feel The Rush”?

A:  I wrote the song but only had the lyrics and the melody, so I had to communicate my vision to the two producers on the track, Flavio Martincowski Jr and Avery Berman. We struggled a bit with the production of the song. We went back and forth with potential tracks till we got the sound right and we couldn’t be happier with the results.

Q: What is the message of your music? And what are your goals as an artist?

A: Personal Empowerment and believing in yourself. I want to continue to grow artistically and musically and hope that I can inspire more people.

Q: Who is your dream artist to collaborate with? (dead or alive)

A: Justin Bieber for all the reasons mentioned above.

Q: What is your advice for people interested in pursuing music as a career or for those trying to enter the industry?

A: Make sure you really have a passion and love for music. It’s also important to have a supportive team that will back you and support you through it all. Believe in yourself and don’t accept NO because you will get a lot of rejections. Don’t let the haters tear you down because having a hater means you’re making an impact, and you are on the right track.

Q: If you could go back in time and give a younger you some words of wisdom, what would they be?

A: Believe in yourself. Post that video, sing in the talent show, out yourself out there. You are better than you think you are. Keep being you. Work Really Hard. Dream Really Big. Anything is possible.
