Q: Can you tell us a bit about yourself and how your childhood impacted your musical direction?
Riya: I started playing guitar when I was 8 and have been singing for as long as I can remember. I think watching Disney Shows as a kid really made me find the joy in music and i wanted to do what they were doing someday. Now I write and produce songs for different artists too!
Toni Binx: From as young as I remember music was always apart of my life, as a kid I sang in choirs and I used to avidly watch video performances of Beyonce.I was a huge fan of Disney and my love for dance grew through High school musical. I was always singing around the house but never thought of being a singer, due to my shyness. It was when I turned 20 I seriously thought of pursuing music as a career.
Hekate: I have been singing since I was five. I always knew I enjoyed performing but I didn’t realise until thirteen that I actually have the ability of making it my career.I remember singing along to Disney songs and wishing myself to be on that platform one day. I would say my love for ‘one direction’ really inspired me to become a singer myself. I had always idolised them and wanted to be like them.
Jessica: I’ve been singing for as long as I can remember, probably since age 5 when I started watching movies like high school musical and mama mia. I even auditioned for Britain’s got talent when I was 8. Music has always been a huge part of my life, I also started played the violin around 6 years old. Although I was such a shy and unconfident child in real life, in my heart I have always been convinced I was born to be a star.
Q: How are you planning on growing your fan base and sharing your music with the world? What message do you have for anyone who is about to discover “Hex”?
Social media is key, you know engaging with fans, posting consistently. Within the following months we plan to have our website out, which would definitely give us a boost. But of course getting out there via live performances is what we’re reaching for. A message we’d give out is ‘BE EXCITED’ we have so much to offer and share, so when people discover HEXX they wont be bored.
Q: Who is the most inspiring artist for you right now? And where do you find inspiration for making music?
Riya: So many artists inspire me but right now groups such as Flo, No guidance are really bringing solid music to the group scene which is a win!!
Toni: There’s so many artists that inspire me as I listen to various genres of music. But i would definitely say Beyonce. I’ve been a beyhive since I was a kid. Her artistry is immaculate and her live performances make me want to perform just as great! As well as Beyonce, for inspo I definitely listen to Brandy, Victoria Monet etc.
Hekate: I listen to various genres so it’s hard to pick one! Currently I listen to a lot of western and k-pop artists so my music taste changes continuously. I really think my vocal style is somehow inspired from artists like Christina Aguilera, Idina Menzel and Hwasa.
Jessica: I don’t necessarily think inspirations can always be pinned down to a person as it usually just comes in moments when your most authentically in touch with your own feelings. But recently I’d say someone like Madison Beer, since listening to her memoir I’ve felt inspired to never give up even through the hard times. As for writing music, I try to draw from the kind of confident person I want and aim to be.
Q: Can you tell us about the story or message behind the song, “Slo-mo.”?
The storyline of Slo-mo was based of a summer romance that one of us experienced a while back. We wanted to express the feeling of never wanting a holiday to end. Wanting life to move in Slo-mo for those weeks, and the intensified connection of meeting someone when your in a hot country away from everyone you know.
Q: How would you describe your sound in one word for potential listeners?
A: Impactful
Q: Did you face any challenges while writing or recording “Slo-mo”?
Music is such a personal thing, you all have to create and agree on pieces of music that meets you all in the middle. So its pretty difficult coordinating all our ideas into one. Because we don’t have a team we have to make sure we meticulously plan and execute everything to give ourselves the best chance possible.
Q: What is the message of your music? And what are your goals as an artist?
Have fun! Especially for women to feel empowered, Hexx are a safe space for anyone to feel good. Our goal is to develop as artists and continue growing day by day. We would love to find an amazing team who see our vision and to get the ball rolling.
Q: Who is your dream artist to collaborate with? (dead or alive)
Riya: Ariana Grande and any other kpop feature
Toni Binx: Normani, Aaliyah, and Beyonce
Hekate: Selena Gomez and seulgi (red velvet)
Jessica: The weeknd and madison beer
Q: What is your advice for people interested in pursuing music as a career or for those trying to enter the industry?
Believe in yourself, and your dreams. Your dreams are just as valid as the next persons. Always know who you are before entering into anything because you’ll probably have some unwarranted opinions said to you. But when your confident in your abilities and who you are, those opinions will mean nothing to you.
Q: If you could go back in time and give a younger you some words of wisdom, what would they be?
Riya: Never ever lose sight of your passion!! If you know in your heart music was meant for you then you need to take all the steps to reach your dreams And don’t listen to anyone who tries to tell you music isn’t a real job and hasn’t done exactly what you want to do!
Hekate: Never give up hope and always have faith in yourself. Don’t be scared to dream big because truly dreams do come true.
Jessica: I think if I could go back the most valuable advice I could give to my younger self would truly be to care less about what people think and focus on just pleasing yourself because life is too short and that’s a battle you’ll never win, so why waste time.
Toni Binx: You are endlessly enough. You’re such a wicked person, do what make you happy and dont care what anyone else thinks or say. If others around you can’t realise how amazing you are, it’s a them problem. Dream big and you are that girl!!
