Q: Welcome back, Harper n Hubble! It’s fantastic to have you with us again. Since our last conversation, a lot has happened in your musical journey. To kick things off, could you share some highlights or pivotal moments that have shaped your artistic path since our last interview?
A: Thanks for having us.
We left our previous distributor towards the end of last year and have now set up our own label “Myvod Records”.
The first album to be released is “Reflections” followed by “Long Highway Road” and our catalogue should be back up by the summer with another three albums to follow. We are still writing tracks to finish off the third, as well as a new project completely for 2026.
Q: Can you describe the musical style of Harper n Hubble in three words?
A: We would normally use a lot more than three, but here goes: Pop. Rock, Electronic. We write what styles we like ourselves.
Q: How do you stay connected with your fans, and what role do they play in shaping your musical journey?
A: We stay in touch through the normal social sites, and if they really want to tell or ask us anything they will mail us. Our contact details are on our site: harperhubble.com or at the end of the interview.
Q: You have just released your album, ‘Reflections’. Is there a story behind it?
A: Reflections features thirteen tracks (no we are not superstitious)
track 9 “Summer of 76” lyrics are in a way about both of us, because in 1976 we were both in different gigging bands, Andy that year was on a major tour with his band supporting a well-known UK band at that time.
For this project our friend Sharon Venal laid down some backing vocals for us on a number of tracks which gave another level to the album. Actually Sharon lives in Somerset which isn’t anywhere near to us. The way we got around the geographical problem was for her to record different takes of her vocal and then send them to us via “Google Drive”, Andy was then able to spin them into the track during production.
Q: What is your favourite track from the album and why?
A: We put many hours into all of our tracks, Andy however, tends to favour the ones we did with Sharon, due to the technical challenges that he faced at the time.
Q: Can you walk us through the creative process of producing the album, “Reflections”?
A: Andy: As mentioned in our previous interview, Paul sits with his guitar and pen and paper in the Shropshire countryside. While I sit in front of my keyboard and mac in the Black Country, any music I come up with I will send via Google Drive across to Paul and Paul brings his songs for us to develop on our studio day at my house.
Once Pauls Guitar and vocal tracks are laid down, I tend to leave a day or so giving my ears a rest, then I will add drums, keys, strings, and more backing vocals. Again leaving the track alone for another day, I will then mix the track and send a version off to Paul via the Google Drive. This gives Paul a chance to listen to the track and when we are together on our next studio day, we have opportunity to either add or re-record any parts. I then perform the final mix a couple of days later again with fresh ears.
Q: What has been the most memorable concert or performance for Harper n Hubble so far?
A: We are mainly producers working in the studio. In the area where we live in the West Midlands UK, the only live music venues tend to be for tribute acts and unless you are performing covers you won’t get booked playing your own original music.
We have however done some memorable radio interviews, as well as performing a stripped-down version of our track “Running Wild” (which is from the “Long Highway Road” album) live on the radio.
Q: Reflecting on your body of work, each song holding its unique significance, could you share a particular track that stands out to you personally? What makes that specific tune special, and why does it hold a place of pride in your musical journey?
A: Between us we have a number of tracks recorded and plan to get them out over the next few months, now we have our own label. For this album “Reflections” “Where has all the love gone” and “Real Lovers” probably stand out more.
Q: Exploring the diverse creative processes within the music industry is always fascinating. Could you provide insight into Harper n Hubble’s unique approach to crafting music? From the initial spark of an idea to the finished song, how do you navigate the creative journey and bring its musical concepts to life?
A: Both of us write and we are into different genres, however, some we both like.
At this time our second album “Long Highway Road” has been released and the tracks on these two albums have been penned by Harper n Hubble. However, there is also a third writer in our team, John Dietrich (Lyricist) and we plan to release a number of tracks spread over the next two or three albums including the release of “Island In the City” and the re-release of “Academic Life” (both by the end of April this year) that were written in addition to the Harper n Hubble compositions by both Paul and John and the odd track written by all three of us.
The other album that Bored City kindly Reviewed was “Just Another Day” in 2024 and the material from that album is planned to be re-released in the next few months, however, we will be replacing the cover tracks featured on the original album with our own compositions, also the album will eventually be re-titled for its release. For anyone who owns a copy of the previous release it will become very rare indeed.
Q: As we wrap up our conversation, looking ahead, what aspirations or dreams do you have for Harper n Hubble, and what message would you like to share with your fans as they continue to accompany you on this musical journey?
A: If your reader has read our previous interview and the album reviews for “Academic Life” and “Just Another Day” they will have noticed our name change! We used to be called “Harper n Hubble music” but since leaving our previous distributor we have slimmed down to “Harper n Hubble”.
“We would like to thank your reader for taking time to peruse this interview and after digesting the accompanying album review, we hope that they will take time to listen to our music”
Paul n Andy
