Interview With Frankie Bird

Q: Can you tell us a bit about yourself and how your childhood impacted your musical direction?
A:
I’m Frankie Bird, an indie pop/ rock singer-songwriter now based in London but I grew up in Reading. I’ve been playing music for the last ten years now and have released four singles and an EP since 2022. I would say when I first started playing guitar and writing music in 2014, the biggest singer-songwriter type stars were Ed Sheeran and Taylor Swift. Initially I was very inspired by their takes on how to craft songs. Later on I discovered my own music leant towards more of an electric, indie sound but those original influences still made a huge impact on my songwriting style.

Q: How are you planning on growing your fan base and sharing your music with the world? What message do you have for anyone who is about to discover “Frankie Bird”?

A: Well I’ve always had a passion for playing music live so I try and go to lots of different open mics sharing my music, whether that be in London or in other locations around the UK. Got to do a bit of TikTok as well of course. My message would probably be that I hope they find the universal themes in my lyrics relatable and enjoy the 90s inspired sound.

Q: Who is the most inspiring artist for you right now? And where do you find inspiration for making music?

A: I really love the new Fontaines D.C. single. I love that they are developing their sound and brand but still keeping to their original roots which make them identifiable and authentic. I hope that I can do the same in the future. I find inspiration for the content of my songs from my life experiences. They are all my own stories and reflections about certain aspects of my life.

Q: Can you tell us about the story or message behind the song, “So Sky Blue.”?

A: My new single ‘So Sky Blue’ is about not giving up and holding your ground. It’s probably the most positive and optimistic of all the songs I have released so far.

Q: How would you describe your sound in one word for potential listeners?

A: Nostalgic

Q: Did you face any challenges while writing or recording “So Sky Blue”?

A: I think I wrote it pretty quickly just on guitar in my bedroom. Bringing it to life with all the other instruments in the studio was really exciting but I always find it a bit of a challenge when it comes to how I want the final mix to sound. The electric guitar lines and vocals are always battling for prominence in my songs. I’m really happy with how it’s turned out though as I think they both have space to shine.

Q: What is the message of your music? And what are your goals as an artist?

A: I’m not sure if there is one cohesive message. I don’t write with an agenda or anything like that. It’s just what I feel in the moment. My main goals are to release an album (hopefully sometime soon) and to keep exploring different places through music.

Q: Who is your dream artist to collaborate with? (dead or alive)

A: How about Jamie T? That would be really cool.

Q: What is your advice for people interested in pursuing music as a career or for those trying to enter the industry?

A: Don’t try to change yourself to fit in with what is currently popular and trending. Do what feels right for you.

Q: If you could go back in time and give a younger you some words of wisdom, what would they be?

A: Honestly just keep going. I’m living the dream I had when I was 14 of recording and releasing my original music and living in London. 🙂
