Q: Can you tell us a bit about yourself and how your childhood impacted your musical direction?
My grandparents were huge fans of the arts, and their passion for music definitely influenced me. Every Sunday, we’d gather around the TV for “Great Performances” on PBS. This exposed me to a wide range of music, from the classics by Gershwin, Berlin, and Bernstein to more contemporary artists. These afternoons watching “Great Performances” developed my love for the American songbook. Their love for musical theatre, led me on my own personal journey towards it. Their favorite musical was “Man of La Mancha” and towards the end when they weren’t doing well, I’d sing “The Impossible Dream” for them to keep their spirits up. Their enthusiasm for the music, the stories, and the incredible performances was contagious, and it instilled in me a love for melody, witty lyrics, and the power of music to transport listeners to another world. This is why I always wear my grandfather’s ring and one of my grandmother’s charms on my neck – to keep them with me at all times, to serve as a constant reminder of the artistic spark they ignited within me.
Q: How are you planning on growing your fan base and sharing your music with the world? What message do you have for anyone who is about to discover “Áyal”?
I’m passionate about connecting with fans worldwide! I’m using social media platforms like Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok, along with all the major streaming services, to share my music and behind-the-scenes glimpses into my creative process. You can also expect more interviews like this one and podcast appearances to spread the word. But let’s be honest, coming from a musical theatre background, live performance is truly where I shine. As I continue to develop my EP, I’m actively building a setlist and can’t wait to hit the stage and connect with audiences through the energy of a live show!
For anyone just discovering Áyal, my message is simple: Get ready to belt your heart out and go on a journey with me to celebrate the beauty of being your authentic self. The world is much more glittery that way! Áyal is all about embracing your individuality, finding your voice, and feeling empowered to share your unique light with the world.
Q: Who is the most inspiring artist for you right now? And where do you find inspiration for making music?
A: Anyone who knows me knows that Beyoncé is my queen! Her albums like “Renaissance” and “COWBOY CARTER” are testaments to her fearless exploration and innovation in the music industry. “Renaissance” isn’t just dance music; it’s a powerful statement about identity. “COWBOY CARTER” redefines country music by claiming its Black roots. Both albums challenge genres and inspire me to push boundaries in my own music, and keep innovating, mixing, and genre-bending.
My personal music is derived from real-life experiences. I explore themes often overlooked in mainstream music, like the complexities of love and patriotism, and the mental health impacts of social media. It’s the beauty and messiness of life that fuels my music. It’s not about making music that is gonna be catchy for me, I want to say something that needs to be said.
Q: Can you tell us about the story or message behind the song, “Love Bomb”?
A: I fell victim to love bombing – showered with affection, then left confused and heartbroken when he kicked me to the curb. That saying, ‘all is fair in love and war’? It felt like a sick joke. Love shouldn’t be a warzone! But that’s exactly what it felt like – a bomb of affection exploding in my life, followed by a ringing in my ears, like those battlefield movies. The experience ignited a creative firestorm. ‘Love Bomb’ poured out – a furious melody laced with betrayal, passion, and hurt.
Growing up on the raw emotion of 80s anthems like Pat Benatar, Bon Jovi, and Joan Jett, I knew I wanted the song to capture that same fiery spirit. It was the perfect vehicle to convey the sentiments of love bombing, especially since these heartbreak heavyweights had already laid the groundwork so well! So ‘Love Bomb’ became my reimagining of the classic glam rock anthem. It’s a battle cry for recognizing manipulation, choosing healthy love, and walking away stronger than ever.
Q: How would you describe your sound in one word for potential listeners?
A: Theatrical!
Q: Did you face any challenges while writing or recording “Love Bomb”?
Coming from musical theatre, recording ‘Love Bomb’ was a whole new world. The idea of retakes and edits felt strange compared to the pressure of live perfection. The song itself also surprised me, even though I wrote it! Intricate rhythms and packed verses demanded precise delivery. Luckily, my amazing vocal coach and producer helped me master it.
My first attempt at recording wasn’t flawless, but that’s the beauty of recording, you get to try again! Months later, with honed vocals, I nailed it in my hometown studio. My management team then suggested killer backing vocals and sonic enhancements, which truly elevated the final version you hear today. ‘Love Bomb’ pushed me to grow, and the result is a song I’m incredibly proud of.
Q: What is the message of your music? And what are your goals as an artist?
I’m all about creating a space for vulnerability, empowerment, and connection. A space where you can be your true, authentic self and live your truth. My personal ethos is “be the glitter you wish to see in the world” Because frankly, the world needs more kindness, empathy, and honesty. That’s what I’m hoping to cultivate through my music – a sense of connection and a celebration of our shared humanity. Maybe a song will spark a conversation about a difficult topic, or maybe it will simply make someone feel a little less alone. Either way, if my music can create a positive impact in the world, then I’ve achieved my goal.
Q: Who is your dream artist to collaborate with? (dead or alive)
A: Beyoncé! Hands down!
Q: What is your advice for people interested in pursuing music as a career or for those trying to enter the industry?
Don’t be afraid to reach out to others for guidance. We cannot do all things ourselves. We are stronger as artists as a collective. “Áyal” isn’t just me. It’s a whole team of folks. Some are music professionals, like my vocal coach, co-composer, producer, and manager. Others are mental health professionals, who have been invaluable in helping me navigating the emotional rollercoaster of being an artist. And of course, some are just friends whose opinions I trust – their honest feedback keeps me grounded and inspired. The Beatles said it best, We “get by with a little help from our friends.”
For aspiring musicians out there, remember this: building a strong support network is key. Look for mentors, connect with other artists in your genre online or in your local scene, and surround yourself with positive and encouraging people.
Q: If you could go back in time and give a younger you some words of wisdom, what would they be?
A: Do not let anyone else decide who you are or what you are meant to do.
Growing up queer, I spent a lot of time feeling like my voice was muted. There were expectations about who I should be, and how I should act – none of which felt genuine. So I took a “safe” path, a traditional career that felt like a costume I never quite fit into. Until it all came crashing down. Even acting, which I loved, started to feel limiting. I was tired of telling the same old stories, tired of lining up for auditions where I never felt truly seen, I was just a number to them. That’s when I realized I craved ownership, a chance to be the master of my fate. And to do this, I began to write my narrative, musically. It wasn’t easy, but it was finally my voice, my story, coming through loud and clear. Don’t be afraid to speak your truth, even when it’s scary. There will be times when you feel pressure to conform, to fit into a mold that doesn’t feel quite right. But your unique voice, your experiences, and your perspective – those are what make you special. So hold onto them, nurture them, and don’t be afraid to share them with the world. You might be surprised by how much your voice can inspire others.
