Q: Can you tell us a bit about yourself and how your childhood impacted your musical direction?
A: I’m 21. When I was 16 I got into freestyle trampolining. It surrounded my existence. When lockdown hit, out of boredom I watched some rockumentaries. It changed my life instantly. I literally picked up guitar the minute the first doc finished. Never once looked back. My Dad’s always been in bands so there was instruments lying around the house for me and my brother to just go. I took all his records and vinyl and spun them all throughout lockdown.
Q: How are you planning on growing your fan base and sharing your music with the world? What message do you have for anyone who is about to discover “Another Day”?
A: I want people to consume our music the way it was created and intended. The hidden gems and beautiful underlying, unique parts to artwork is lost to the swipe of social media, short attention spans and peoples un satisfaction with the world around them without stimulation. The world that surrounds us is beautiful and more than enough. I urge people to find comfort in the silence of the now. Stay present and absorb art in its fullest form, not from a 15 second clip on Tik tok.
Q: Who is the most inspiring artist for you right now? And where do you find inspiration for making music?
A: Right now it’s the Replacements. Very few bands have songwriters which I deeply connect with in a particular way. Paul Westerberg is one of them. His melodies and sounds feel like how I feel as a person. Inspiration comes from anywhere for me. In fact it comes when I don’t chase it. It appears when the time is right.
Q: Can you tell us about the story or message behind the song, “Doghouse Roses.”?
A: The name Doghouse Roses came from a man named Frank at an open mic. He said if we ever change the band name we should change it to that. I thought damn that’s a good title so I took it. I had it for a while and eventually found a topic through a friend going through a ropey breakup. The chorus came straight away and I found the verses sitting deep in my voice memos from a year or two prior. It all just fell into place naturally.
Q: How would you describe your sound in one word for potential listeners?
A: Green.
Q: Did you face any challenges while writing or recording “Doghouse Roses”?
A: No.
Q: What is the message of your music? And what are your goals as an artist?
A: To find stillness of the mind. Peace within the silence of the now. Remove judgement and learn to just observe. Seek comfort in the dark knowing what’s next is great.
Q: Who is your dream artist to collaborate with? (dead or alive)
A: Craig Lee-Williams
Q: What is your advice for people interested in pursuing music as a career or for those trying to enter the industry?
A: keep to what you like. Don’t change your output for anyone or anything. If you are happy then that’s it. If you have something to give untouched by external pressure there is always someone waiting to receive it. You’re doing a disservice to the receiver if you don’t.
Q: If you could go back in time and give a younger you some words of wisdom, what would they be?
A: I would not say anything. Everything that’s happened wether good or bad has been a perfect experience and manifestation to lead me to where I am now. Why’d I ever want to change the course of my past. Even in times when I struggled. It’s all for the good. To experience it all.
