Interview With Annika Catharina

Can you tell us a bit about yourself and how your childhood impacted your musical direction?

Hello, my name is Annika Catharina, I am a singer-songwriter from Abbotsford, BC in Canada.

Music has been my passion since childhood, and I enjoy sharing my unique voice and lyrics through my songs. I grew up in a household where music was always present, thanks to my parents’ love for it. My mom played the saxophone, which inspired us to join the band in elementary school. However, I quickly found my true passion in singing and made the switch to choir. I loved being on stage and performing with others, and I vividly remember singing “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” on a band trip, which really solidified my love for music.

My grandpa also had a passion for singing, and our little family concerts were always a highlight. Once I discovered my love for music, I jumped at every opportunity to get involved—joining concert choir, jazz choir, and even musical theatre, despite not being the strongest actor – I never loved memorizing the lines. I participated in talent shows and events to showcase my voice.

At the time, I didn’t realize that music could lead to a career, but now I am able to explore that path. What I did know was that as long as music is a part of my life, I’d be truly happy. My childhood experiences have shaped my musical journey and continue to inspire me today.

How are you planning on growing your fan base and sharing your music with the world? What message do you have for anyone who is about to discover “Annika Catharina”?

I plan to grow my fan base by performing at shows and traveling to connect with audiences in different places. I’m also focusing on reaching out through social media to engage with fans and share my journey. Having my music available on various streaming platforms will make it easier for people to discover my work. Additionally, I’m excited to create merchandise to further connect with my supporters.

For anyone about to discover “Annika Catharina,” I want you to know that my music—whether it’s a song I’ve written or one from another artist—aims to evoke genuine emotions. I want listeners to feel something, whether it’s joy, happiness, or even sadness. My goal is to share my stories and experiences through my songs, and I can’t wait for you to join me on this journey!

Who is the most inspiring artist for you right now? And where do you find inspiration for making music?

It’s hard to pick just one inspiring artist because my taste in music is always changing. I love listening to different genres that make me feel something. Right now, I’m really into Noah Cyrus, Zach Bryan, Benson Boone, Nate Smith, Megan Moroney, Nothing But Thieves and JJ Wilde. Each of them has a unique sound, and their music really resonates with me. I find inspiration in the emotions they express and the stories they tell through their songs.

Can you tell us about the story or message behind the song, “Bandit”?

The message behind “Bandit” is all about want and desire. I knew it was something special the moment I heard the demo. It was written by Amanda Couture, Dan Botch, and Garrett Ward, and I was instantly drawn in when my producers brought it to me. I felt really honored that they shared this song because it resonated with me so much. I loved the cheeky line “steal your heart, like a Bandit,” which perfectly captures the playful side of desire. I want people to be able to blast this song in their cars or on their stereos and feel completely immersed in it, just like I do when I sing it. This song is for anyone who understands what it’s like to want or desire someone or something. I truly hope listeners enjoy it as much as I do!

How would you describe your sound in one word for potential listeners?

I would describe my sound as “dynamic” or “unique”.

Did you face any challenges while writing or recording “Bandit”?

One of my biggest concerns was making the songwriters proud. I wanted listeners to connect with it and feel the same emotions I experienced when I first heard the demo. Balancing my vision with the original intent of the song while staying true to myself during the recording process was a great challenge.

What is the message of your music? And what are your goals as an artist?

The message of my music is all about making people feel—whether it’s joy, sadness, or anything in between. I want my songs to resonate with listeners on an emotional level and create a connection. As an artist, my goals are to share my stories, inspire others, and continue to grow creatively while reaching a wider audience. Ultimately, I want to create music that leaves a lasting impact.

Who is your dream artist to collaborate with? (dead or alive)

One is too hard, so I’ll list a few! My dream artists to collaborate with would be Chris Stapleton, Nothing But Thieves, JJ Wilde, Teddy Swims, P!nk, Freddie Mercury, Greta Van Fleet, Noah Cyrus and John Mayer. Each of them brings a unique sound and powerful energy that I would love to blend with my own!

What is your advice for people interested in pursuing music as a career or for those trying to enter the industry?

My advice for those interested in pursuing music as a career is to learn as you go. Embrace the failures and the “no’s” because they are all part of the journey. Don’t let fear hold you back from pursuing something you love. Stay persistent, be open to growth, and keep creating. Your passion and dedication will help you navigate the ups and downs of the industry.

If you could go back in time and give a younger you some words of wisdom, what would they be?

If I could go back in time, I would tell my younger self to embrace failure, as that’s where real learning and growth happen. Making mistakes is okay; they’re valuable lessons that shape who you are meant to be. I’ve always wanted to excel at everything, and while that drive is still there, it sometimes pushes me to work too hard or hold back out of fear of failing, which can lead to periods of being anxious. I would remind myself to enjoy the journey and not take things too seriously.
