South London-based band Xylophone Yacht Zombies are back with a colorful and creative new EP called “Bondi Tram”, and it’s truly a fun ride from start to finish. With a name as wild as their sound, this band keeps things interesting, each track brings something new to the table while still keeping a strong and unique identity.
The EP kicks off with the title track, “Bondi Tram”, a fast-paced and lively opener that immediately sets the tone. The vocals are powerful and catchy and the band’s energy is contagious. It’s one of those songs that grabs you right away and makes you want to see what comes next.
Next up is “Stone’s Throw”, an instrumental piece that shines with beautiful guitar work, especially from the 12-string. It feels thoughtful and smooth and it gives listeners a moment to relax and soak in the musicianship of the group.
“Lone Star State (of Mind)” turns things back up again with big sounds and strong vocals. It has a bold Americana feel to it, like a drive across wide-open roads under a Texas sky. The energy here is impressive and the melody is super addictive, we found ourselves replaying this one a lot.
Then we come to “Prelude to Planet Blue”, a calming drum-led instrumental. It’s simple but rich with a meditative feel that shows off the band’s ability to slow things down without losing their magic. It’s short, but it really sets the mood for the final track.
“Planet Blue” closes the EP with a dreamy romantic tone. Slower in tempo, it still holds your attention with heartfelt vocals and a spacey, smooth sound. It leaves you feeling like you’ve been on a journey and once it ends, you kind of want to take the whole trip again.
The production throughout the EP is clean and professional and every instrument feels like it has a purpose. Xylophone Yacht Zombies don’t stick to just one style, they blend rock, jazz, spacey vibes, and even bits of folk in a way that somehow works perfectly.
This band is different and they have something special going on here. The variety of sounds, the passion in their playing and the creativity in their songwriting all stand out. This EP is full of personality and it’s the kind of project that makes you appreciate music made by people who clearly love what they do. We’ll definitely be keeping an eye on this band!

XYZ were born out the ashes of 1980’s cult band MAD ACID ENTERPRISE which was a song writing experiment based in Catford. It started in Kevins house where the Lowery Organ was a nice piece of furniture but one day his neighbour’s patience exploded and MAE were relocated to Mark’s flat, above a carpet shop in Sydenham. Blue plaques are expected in due course. Tracks were recorded at Antenna studios, Crystal Palace, Engineered by Stefan Inglis. Also at RMS Studios just behind Crystal Palace FC’s ground. The Yellow and Blue EP , Hawaiian State Flag EP and the latest BONDI TRAM EP were recorded by Mark Dawson at the amazing Golddust Studios Bromley. XYZ are not really easy to label or classify as the songs all differ so much. Our problem is what genre should we be? You decide. Peace and Love XYZ
