Caldher is an indie artist based in Toronto and “Momentary” is his new six-track EP that delves deep into the anxieties of growing older and the bittersweet moments of reflection that come with it. After the success of his first EP “Ascent”, he continues to deliver honest and heartfelt songwriting and explores themes of regret, worry, and the beauty of living in the moment.
The EP starts with “Thursday Mess” a catchy pop tune with an infectious energy, which prepares the listener for the variety of styles to follow. ”Make You Stay” is a song with lyrics that will touch the heart and an aching sincerity, while “Not Enough” is a beautiful piano ballad with deeply touching lyrics. Each track feels like a snapshot of his personal growth, which is how he defines his music as photographs of specific moments in his life.
The dreamy song “Constellation”, shows the growth of Caldher as an artist, with a blend of raw indie rock and atmospheric soundscapes. The production, co-done by Caldher and Justice Der, and elevated by Hans Li’s perfect mixing and mastering, provides a wide and deep background that matches this artist’s deep, jazzy voice.
Caldher’s ability to weave raw emotion into his music is evident throughout Momentary. Tracks like “Eclipse” and “Passerby” take the listener on a haunting yet soothing journey, with layered synths and carefully crafted arrangements. The EP has a very personal feel to it but at the same time, it is very easy for anyone to relate to, which is a testament to Caldher’s ability to reach out to people through his music.
This EP is a beautiful experience from start to finish and touched us deeply. Caldher’s voice is rich and his songwriting hit home for anyone who has wrestled with the passage of time and the pull of what-ifs. Our favorite track is “Not Enough” because of its minimalism and the power of the vocals. This EP is a message to embrace the little things and be content with what is going on in life even if it seems like a mess. So If you are in search of music that inspires and comforts you at the same time, “Momentary” is a record you should not miss. It’s an impressive sophomore release that cements Caldher as an artist to watch.
ABOUT THE ARTIST:
Toronto-based musician Christopher Chan, known as Caldher, is carving his own path with his distinct brand of indie songwriting. Surrounded by music since childhood – from the sound of his father playing the erhu to his first taste of punk rock, introduced by his sisters at age 8 – Caldher has always been fascinated by different expressions of sound, and it’s this appreciation for musical diversity which fuels his passion for music. A graduate from Humber College with a Bachelor of Music, he blends his deep musical repertoire and jazz training to create his own genre-bending indie hooks. Drawing inspiration from artists such as Radiohead, Arctic Monkeys, and Phoebe Bridgers, Caldher drives his melancholia-tinged lyricism with facets of his own alt rock, R&B, and jazz inflections.
