Edy Forey’s latest single, “Nature Boy,” offers a captivating blend of jazz tradition and contemporary flair, giving listeners a taste of what’s to come from their upcoming album, “Culture Today.” With vocalist Edy Szewy and keys player Guilhem Forey at the helm, the duo introduces a fresh interpretation of this classic tune, infusing it with their signature style they playfully dub as “Foreyesque.”
At the heart of “Nature Boy” lies a reharmonized jazz classic, adorned with warm Rhodes tones and an unconventional chord progression that creates a beautiful and mysterious atmosphere. The song’s lyrics, particularly the poignant message, “the greatest thing you’ll ever learn is just to love and be loved in return,” resonate deeply with the duo. According to Edy, this philosophy encapsulates the essence of the song, emphasizing love as life’s ultimate pursuit, for better or for worse.
What sets “Nature Boy” apart is not only its musicality but also its collaborative spirit. Featuring the talents of esteemed Japanese jazz singer and flugelhorn player TOKU, as well as the renowned Scottish drummer Tom Gordon, the track seamlessly blends cultural influences and musical expertise. TOKU’s delicate flugelhorn melodies infuse the song with an enchanting Oriental breeze, adding layers of richness to its sonic tapestry.
In a conversation with the duo, Edy sheds light on the song’s evolution and thematic depth. The addition of new lyrics, exploring themes of human history, enriches the narrative, offering listeners a deeper connection to the music. Edy’s personal touch and lyrical contributions further enhance the song’s emotional resonance, reinforcing the timeless message of love’s transcendent power.
“Nature Boy” serves as a promising glimpse into the diverse musical landscape of Edy Forey’s upcoming album. With each release, the duo cements their reputation as versatile and innovative artists, seamlessly navigating the intersection of jazz tradition and contemporary soundscape. As anticipation builds for the release of “Culture Today,” fans can expect a dynamic and thought-provoking musical journey that celebrates the beauty of cultural diversity and the universal language of love.
ABOUT THE BAND:
Among the rare breed of artists determined to pave a way for a new genre of music, duo Edy Forey hopes to coin a new term – Urban Jazz – to describe a sophisticated, groove-centered sound. Their vibe is brought to life by the New York veteran Bob Power, who gave such acts as Meshell Ndegeocello, Erykah Badu and D’Angelo their trademark sonics. “In my 35+ years in the upper echelons of the professional music business, I have seldom met a duo with more talent and drive. They combine a unique and compelling blend of pop music sensibility with a deep foundation of advanced musicianship.” ~Bob Power
Forey’s compositions carry an original signature as does his soloing; he relies on tension-filled chord progressions mixing joy, pain and mystery. Edy’s voice is her own timber – one urging to deliver a message. The two met on the Edinburgh student circuit in 2017 and instantly bonded in their non-conformist approach to life, music, and the status-quo, and began working on their debut in 2020 at the onset of the first covid lockdown.
Their groovy debut record Culture Today due in April ’24 is a manifesto of sober-minded individuality taking on life in the XXI century. Creme-de-la-creme of featured artists include Michael League and Bob Reynolds (Snarky Puppy), Sharay Reed (The Funk Apostles), Femi Koleoso (Ezra Collective) Alex Hahn, TOKU, Isac Jamba and many more greats from the world of jazz, groove and soul.
