Conversation With Space Between Us

Q: Hey, can you tell us a bit about where you come from, and what made you want to start a career in music?

A: So we met in Hammersmith, at first we were friends just hanging out, we played Dungeons and Dragons and also had one memorable evening at a blues bar. We formed together for one show early 2017 for the launch of Surj’s solo album ‘All Things True’ we had so much fun playing music we decided to form as band late 2017. Our name came from Matthew after hearing one of Surj’s songs ’Space Between Us’ We just love music, and what music can do, 3 Albums in and there is still the same buzz of having a blank piece of paper and creating a sound out of nowhere.

Q: Did you have any formal training, or are you self-taught?

A: We have all had lessons at various points, but for a lot of the music that happens in Space Between Us, we go far and wide and teach ourselves new styles and techniques that work for the type of music we are working on.

Q: Who were your first and strongest musical influences, and why the name ‘Space Between Us’?

A: This is such a hard question, but also the biggest strength of band, is that we all listen to different types of music, so when we come to write all four of us have so much to pour in to the song. For Matthew it would be the KIllers, for Surj it would be Patrick Watson, for Suneel it would be Blackpink & for Joff it would be Switchfoot! The name for the band came when Surj was recording his solo album back in 2017, Surj was working on a song but in the middle of recording  went to watch the movie ’Space Between Us’ and then named the song ’Space Between Us’ This song was of of favourites to jam too when we started the band so its was an obvious choice.

Q: You have just released your new album ‘How Are You Really’. Is there a story behind it?

A: The new album is a collection of songs about our journeys since being in the band, exploring the challenges, heartache, and joys of coming to terms to who we all actually are. ‘how are you really’ aims to ask ourselves and others to see the reality of where we are and rejoice in the good as well as the bad, there’s an exciting, uncharted world of possibility out there, as one of the songs says let’s choose to be in now.

Q: Can we expect a new EP or even another album from you in the near future?

A: Right now we are really enjoying having a new album out, we have been overwhelmed with the reaction to ‘how are you really’ Another album is such a big commitment, and it normally take us two years to finish one, but at some point in the future we do want to get back to making music

Q: What do you feel are the key elements in your music that should resonate with listeners, and how would you personally describe your sound?

A: The biggest element for us is when crafting songs, we always apply the ‘Campfire Theory’ In other words if it sounds good around a campfire it’s going to sound great in any format. Our sound is always changing but we want to always have songs with amazing heart behind them.

Q: Do you feel that your music is giving you back just as much fulfillment as the amount of work you are putting into it, or are you expecting something more?

A: Music is always giving back to us! We’re really lucky to be at a point in our careers where we can put out any music we feel like putting out. There’s so many moments even in rehearsals, which we are always going to treasure.

Q: Could you describe your creative processes? How do usually start, and go about shaping ideas into a completed song?

A: We normally bring in a rough idea to rehearsals and develop it from there, what happens is the writer of that original idea see’s it out until it has reached its final form, but we find our best songs are when we all input.

Q: What has been the most difficult thing you’ve had to endure in your life or music career so far?

A:
The biggest thing for all us is finding a balance between our normal lives and making music which can be really tricky at times but actually its our moments with our families and friends where we get the inspiration for the music, so it works both ways

Q: On the contrary, what would you consider a successful, proud or significant point in your life or music career so far?

A: Right now we are so proud of our new album ‘how are you really’ It’s the album we have always dreamed of making, and now having it out there as a reality is just the best.
