Conversation With No Drinks On The Dancefloor

Q: Hey, can you tell us a bit about where you come from, and what made you want to start a career in music?

A: We are all from Essex, UK and from an early age have all enjoyed every aspect of music, wether that be playing live, recording, listening or watching, we just love music. So to be able to make a career out of it would be a dream!

Q: And what other artists have you found yourself listening to lately?

A: As a band we all have similar tastes in bands such as the Arctic Monkeys, Royal Blood and Foo Fighters. However each of us has our own niece as well which helps to add a bit of diversity to what we create. I personally have really got into Slipknot recently and I love discovering new genres and bands.

Q: Who were your first and strongest musical influences, and why the name ‘no drinks on the dancefloor’?

A: As mentioned above we are all massive fans of the Arctic Monkeys and that UK based early 2000s indie sound. The story behind our name starts with an indie rock and alternative nightclub in our hometown called The Pink Toothbrush, it’s our favourite place to go out at the weekend and it plays the exact genre of music we love! After debating, for what felt like an age, on what we were gonna name the band we remembered a sign above the DJ booth that read “no drinks on the dancefloor” and it just clicked.

Q: You have just released your new single, ‘Devil Eyes’. Is there a story behind it?

A: As with every song there is a story, but I like to keep things quite ambiguous so that people can create their own stories and draw from their own experiences. Ultimately though it’s about someone that has a hold of you and you can’t and don’t know if you want to escape.

Q: Can we expect a new EP or even an album from you in the near future?

A: As of right now we have no plans on an EP or album but realistically that’s the end goal. We are however looking to be releasing at least a couple more singles in the near future so there is definitely some things to look forward to.

Q: What do you feel are the key elements in your music that should resonate with listeners, and how would you personally describe your sound?

A: Overall I think I’d describe our sound as something familiar yet new at the same time. Drawing clear inspiration from early 2000s indie but putting our own spin on it. But really we just play what we enjoy playing and I hope that’s something that can resonate with our listeners. That enjoyment for our music, along with our adaptable lyrics and catchy riffs are the real key aspects of our music.

Q: Do you feel that your music is giving you back just as much fulfillment as the amount of work you are putting into it, or are you expecting something more?

A: As we are just starting out it’s hard to say, but I think any musician would be lying if they said they didn’t want more. This industry is full of ups and downs but I feel it’s the desire for more that keeps you going and gives you the drive to really push on.

Q: Could you describe your creative processes? How do usually start, and go about shaping ideas into a completed song?

A: Over the years the process has changed, the lyrics used to come first then I’d sit down and write the music around them. Now I’d say it’s probably a bit of both. I’ll have a notes page full of random lyrics and I’ll just mess around on my guitar until I find something that works, then dip into that notes page to fit some lyrics around it. After getting a rough idea of what I want it to sound like we will meet up together, jam it out and everyone adds their own individual parts.

Q: What has been the most difficult thing you’ve had to endure in your life or music career so far?

A: To be honest the most difficult thing so far was just getting started. We went through a number of different lineups before the one we are on now and spent a lot of time trying to find out how best to continue. There was a time where I didn’t think that we’d ever get through it and it all felt very dispiriting. But now that we have a solid foundation in place now is our time to really push on!

Q: On the contrary, what would you consider a successful, proud or significant point in your life or music career so far?

A: There are a couple things that I’m really proud of, first being this single that we have released. We have wanted to do this for ages and to finally actually release a song that we’ve worked countless hours on is a really great feeling. The other thing I’m especially proud of is getting the opportunity to play at our famous local venue Chinnerys twice. Having had bands like the Arctic Monkeys, the 1975 and Nothing But Thieves play there in the past it was a great honour to play there as well, and we’d love to do it again some time.
