Conversation With Mr Champion

Q: Hey, can you tell us a bit about where you come from, and what made you want to start a career in music?

A: Sup, Cool. I am currently in London, and I think that it’s amazing here. The city buzz is incredible.

I started to follow a career in Music because I have an incredible passion for it. The Love for music has been with Me from a very young age, and it has only grown with Me.

Q: Did you have any formal training, or are you self-taught?

A: As a Lyricist, I’ve just been Blessed. But, I do believe that My time in Church and being surrounded by Music has helped perfect this, for sure.

Q: Who were your first and strongest musical influences, and why the name ‘Mr Champion’?

A: My Strongest Musical influences- I haven’t really taken influences from a particular set of Artists alone. I like different genres of Music, and so that helps. But be it a melodic song, or the hard-hitting songs, there have been comparisons to, or I can sometimes have Music that shows that it has influences from artists such as Nas ,Tupac, Biggie etc (90s era Hip Hop), or more modern artists like Kendrick Lamar and J.Cole. There can always be elements that can inspire and add some sort of edge to what you do with your Art that can come from hearing what other artists may release. But, with this, it’s important to stay original also. This will ensure that any musical influence may guide you, rather than become your only format.

The Name Mr Champion or King Champion was a reminder that I have been Blessed to win. In circumstances, be it where you came from, or what you may face, you have to be determined to Win. God gave Me what I would need to do that, and so this was to remind Myself of this. Also, Names are pretty important, so they should be chosen and used wisely. It is also still here, because I think that it’s dope.

Q: You have just released your new single, ‘The No Mercy Freestyle’. Is there a story behind it?

A: This Single was a Lyrical PSA to everyone. This was to make it clear that I was going for Greatness, and everyone is now being put on notice. I also discussed current events that have raised unrest, such as political events and even race relations,

and issues that could be found within many communities. This Song became very informative, as well as lyrically hard hitting.

Q: Can we expect a new EP or even an album from you in the near future?

A: Yes. That is the plan, and God Willing, that does get done. So, I’ll keep on working towards that target, and it should be completed soon. So, keep it locked, and watch this space!

Q: What do you feel are the key elements in your music that should resonate with listeners, and how would you personally describe your sound?

A: There are quite a few elements of My Music that may resonate with the listeners. I do tend to talk about current events. So within the high level lyricism, there are lyrics that may resonate with the listeners because it talks about current, social or local events that may be occurring, or the systemic/ systematic issues within different communities and cultures. Race relations is an example of what you may hear Me address with My Music. I also believe that there is some positivity with what I drop, that may inspire the listeners. The uplifting messages will inspire and engage listeners for sure. Good beats also help, and I have used some incredible beats with My Music- the producers that I have worked with on certain Tracks have been dope as well.

I would describe My Music in general as versatile (not just because of the Lyrical Verses haha), but because I can use different styles and do different things. So, versatile and diverse. It generally is hard-hitting as well, often informative, critical and sometimes, reflective. Which is good, because of the diverse audience that it may reach.

Q: Do you feel that your music is giving you back just as much fulfillment as the amount of work you are putting into it, or are you expecting something more?

A: I do. I have achieved some great things, and I look forward to achieving more, God Willing. But, what gives Me the fulfillment for it is the love for it. I believe that the Music is always fulfilling if/when this is the main focus. When other things come into view, or certain situations, this could affect your love for it. But, when you’re focused on the Art itself, then this will ensure that the love is never lost. So, the aim is to never lose the love, or your reason for doing it.

Q: Could you describe your creative processes? How do you usually start, and go about shaping ideas into a completed song?

A: I don’t know if there is a particular process, because the style of some Songs will differ from others. The process may differ, depending on the style of the Music, and the implementation of ideas may change, but this is just what happens with the creation of Art.

Q: What has been the most difficult thing you’ve had to endure in your life or music career so far?

A: I would say that many Artists generally may have a vision in their minds, and sometimes, things may not go in that order. Dealing with promoting, and platforms, especially as an independent Artist, could require more work than expected. I was always going to require a lot of work, but there are setups in place that could require additional work from the independent artist, which already has a lot of work to focus on.

Q: On the contrary, what would you consider a successful, proud or significant point in your life or music career so far?

A: Many things. Every track that dropped and it comes out sounding exactly how I imagined it, or better, is a success. The Music that I release, when it has an impact on people, is a success. As an independent Artist, getting My Music onto platforms is a success. I’m here having an interview with your platform- that is a success. We are progressing and moving onto bigger things, but even being in a place where there is still a passion for what I do, along with the fact that I am still doing this, that in itself carries an element of success for Me. At the end of the day, being an independent Artist may be hard work, but in the end, it is always very rewarding when you see the vision come to life. The right perspective will help you celebrate all of your wins.

Thank you for this interview.
