Q: Hi Matt Lang! It’s fantastic to have you with us. To kick things off, please tell us a bit about where you come from, and what made you want to start a music career.
A: I am from a small town named Maniwaki in the north of Quebec, Canada. My grandfather introduced me to country music and I grew up playing the violin and guitar with my family.Playing hockey was a priority growing up, and then music took over. I studied music production for a while and also worked as a radio host at the local radio station in Maniwaki. That’s where I did my first show and when I knew I wanted to pursue music professionally.
Q: Can you describe the musical style of Matt Lang in three words?
A: Vintage, festive, fun!
Q: How do you stay connected with your fans, and what role do they play in shaping your musical journey?
A: I try to stay active on social media but the best way for me to connect with my fans is at the shows. I come out after every show to meet everyone, shake hands and take pictures. I think this is very important and I enjoy meeting people that love and support my music and my career. I love hearing their comments, which of my songs they like, etc. I’m a people person, I love having people around me and face to face is always better than a screen.
Q: You have just released your new single, ‘All Night Longer’. Is there a story behind it?
A: The song is about having someone on your mind all day and looking forward to seeing that person and never wanting that moment to end. I feel like it’s also how I feel about touring. My band is like family and fans are what makes everything possible for us, so playing shows is our favourite part of the job. Every night is a different family party and we never want it to end.
Q: What is your favorite verse from the song and why?
A: Probably the chorus, it’s just so catchy and fun, it’s a feel good song for sure.
Q: Can you walk us through the creative process of producing the single, “All Night Longer”?
A: This song was actually written by Justin Wilson, Chris LaCorte and Bart Butler, but I loved it as soon as I heard it and knew this would be such a fun song to play live.
Q: What has been the most memorable concert or performance for Matt Lang so far?
A: There have been many but opening for Luke Combs at Plaines d’Abraham in Quebec City in 2022 in front of 80 000 people is definitely one. Smaller shows where everyone knows the lyrics are also very special.
Q: Reflecting on your body of work, each song holding its unique significance, could you share a particular track that stands out to you personally? What makes that specific tune special, and why does it hold a place of pride in your musical journey?
A: There is one I’m thinking about but it is not out yet. It’ll be on my new album that comes out in May. It’s called Get Over You. You’ll have to check that out.
Q: Exploring the diverse creative processes within the music industry is always fascinating. Could you provide insight into Matt Lang’s unique approach to crafting music? From the initial spark of an idea to the finished song, how do you navigate the creative journey and bring its musical concepts to life?
A: English is not my first language, so since I’ve started my English project, it definitely has been more challenging for me to write songs. I love creating riffs and melodies, but I surround myself with other writers to write the lyrics. I can communicate my ideas but it was harder in the beginning to put those into songs. I’ve worked with my producer and now very good friend Danick Dupelle on my 3 albums and writing and working with him has been a game changer for me. I’m also always on the road, so it’s hard to find time to write or make music on a day to day basis. I try to make trips to Nashville every couple months and then I can really focus on creating for a few days straight which is really inspiring.
Q: As we wrap up our conversation, looking ahead, what aspirations or dreams do you have for Matt Lang, and what message would you like to share with your fans as they continue to accompany you on this musical journey?
A: I think my biggest dream would be to play at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville and just keep doing what I love. It’s not always easy but if you have the passion, keep working as hard as you can to achieve your goals. And stay true to yourself, don’t try to do everything that everybody else is doing.
