Conversation With Lofi Legs

Q: Can you tell us a bit about yourself and how your childhood impacted your musical direction?

A: My name is Paris Cox-Farr and i grew up in san francisco california. I left school in the 2nd grade to travel with my family. We spent time in greece and brazil and i spent hours on my ipod listening to a playlist of songs from the 1990’s that my cool older cousin gave me for christmas. It was packed with hits from bands like pavement, built to spill, belle and sebastian, the strokes, ect… Both of my parents also exposed me to different artists as a child. My dad was the 60’s 70’s psychedelic rock head showing me frank zappa, led zeppelin, the kinks, the beatles, pink floyd, also took me to see jeff beck, joe satriani, peter frampton.  and my mom showed me more modern rock outfits like radiohead, cocteau twins, dandy warhols. Music was always the main event after any family party with drunken sing-alongs lasting for hours into the night. My grandpa would play folk songs on his ukulele and even remembered them when he lost his memory to dementia.

Q: How are you planning on growing your fan base and sharing your music with the world? What message do you have for anyone who is about to discover “Lofi Legs”?

A: I am planning to continuing to write and peform music for the rest of my life. And hoping that with time i grow enough of a fanbase to tour indefinitely and see the world with my band mates / friends. If you’re about to discover lofi legs i would say : get comfy , feel your feelings and hug your friends more.

Q: Who is the most inspiring artist for you right now? And where do you find inspiration for making music?

A: Some very inspiring bands / artists for me right now are Elliot Smith, Alex G,  Tim Presely of White fence, Cate Le Bon and Kamikaze Palm Tree. I find most of my inspiration from spending time listening to music with my friends, biking, skating, writing in my diary and going out of my comfort zone. A lot of my inspiration comes from my personal relationships.

Q: Can you tell us about the story or message behind the song, “Breakup Sex.”?

A: I wrote breakup sex after having sex with a girl who had broken up with me. We got together to split up our stuff and one thing led to another. The song came out of us splitting our butt plugs into to two separate bags, this detail of the end of our fling was so crushing yet pretty funny to me at the time and still is. I guess the message is that even at the bleakest times it’s important to find humor in the darkness.

Q: How would you describe your sound in one word for potential listeners?

A: tragic-magic`

Q: Did you face any challenges while writing or recording “Breakup Sex”?

A: It took a while to get this song into the studio but once I did it was pretty easy to start tracking. I’ve always felt very comfortable bringing songs to the table and following through with them. I guess the most challenging part was the self fulfilling prophecy. Writing and releasing a song called breakup sex kind of manifests heartbreak, which is unavoidable.

Q: What is the message of your music? And what are your goals as an artist?

A: The message of my music is to live your life free of judgment and go above your own expectations of yourself. Ultimately my goal is to continue writing songs and grow as an artist, i feel that with each passing rotation around the sun my music gets closer to what i really feel.

Q: Who is your dream artist to collaborate with? (dead or alive)

A: Tim Presley

Q: What is your advice for people interested in pursuing music as a career or for those trying to enter the industry?

A: Write a song! Jam with your friends as often as possible. Get out, see a show, set up a show. It doesn’t have to be perfect or at some huge venue. Cut yourself some slack and make somthing that you truly believe in and the career will follow as long as you stick with it!

Q: If you could go back in time and give a younger you some words of wisdom, what would they be?

A: Be less harsh on yourself for everything. Communicate boundaries and feeling more with close friends and never close yourself off completely to the world. Hold onto positive friends and let the ones who aren’t there vanish into the ether. I would lastly say to keep your chin up and keep trucking along and probably give myself a hug.
