Conversation With Lillian Grace

Q: Hey, can you tell us a bit about where you come from, and what made you want to start a career in music?

A: I come from the southwest side of Houston. I grew up listening to a lot of RNB and pop music. I didn’t have the greatest childhood, but music was always there to make me feel better. That’s what initially brought me to creating my own music because I wanted to help others feel less alone.

Q: And what other artists have you found yourself listening to lately?

A: I have been really obsessed with the new albums from Miley Cyrus (Endless Summer Vacation) and Melanie Martinez (Portals). They are both such amazing songwriters and I love how they experiment with sounds!

Q: Who were your first and strongest musical influences?

A: My first strong musical influences were Sam Smith, Nothing More, and Highly Suspect. I love singing the beautiful melodies that are in Sam’s songs, but deep down I’m a big emo kid. I’d love to be able to combine the soul of RNB and pop with the sounds of emo and rock music.

Q: You have just released your new single, ‘Got To Know’. Is there a story behind it?

A: Yeah! The song tells the story of my relationship with my mother during my upbringing. About a month before I was born, my father was arrested for intoxicated manslaughter. My mother decided to stay married to him throughout his whole sentence, taking me to see him in prison for the first ten years of my life. I came up with the title for the song because I was the only physical part of my dad that my mother had at that time. We now have a great relationship and I wouldn’t change anything if I could.

Q: Can we expect a new EP or even an album from you in the near future?

A: I have just dropped the first of five singles for this year! There’s definitely more music coming for you all!

Q: How would you describe the overall sound and style of “Got To Know”?

A: My mom was the one who influenced my RNB and pop sound. We used to listen to a lot of Mary J. Blidge when I was little, so I tried really hard to make this an Emo RNB song.

Q: Are there any interesting or unique production techniques or elements that you incorporated into “Got To Know”?

A: When I was producing the track, I decided to take the guitars and double them. One of the guitars is just raw, while the other has a really wet reverb. It adds just the perfect amount of warmth to the song.

Q: Could you describe your creative processes? How do usually start, and go about shaping ideas into a completed song?

A: I typically write the lyrics first, I use songwriting as a coping mechanism so whenever things get hard, I’m typically writing a song about it to make me feel better. If I really vibe with what I write I’ll start to create a beat for it. Once that’s complete, I’ll head to the studio to record a new song for you guys!

Q: What has been the most difficult thing you’ve had to endure in your life or music career so far?

A: I have had a lot of traumatic experiences and I have had a lot of friends pass away. I recently moved to Nashville from my hometown to pursue music. It was really hard for me to leave the city where they had all passed, but I knew I had to leave to make them proud and achieve my dreams.

Q: On the contrary, what would you consider a successful, proud or significant point in your life or music career so far?

A: I’m extremely proud of myself for relocating to Nashville. I feel I will find more people who will enjoy my music than in Houston. I’m so excited for the growth I have seen in the last year, I love connecting with new fans online. The whole reason I started making music was to hopefully impact people and help them feel less alone, so when a fan reaches out, it makes my whole week!
