Conversation With Kiara Mali

Q: Hey, can you tell us a bit about where you come from, and what made you want to start a career in music?

A: I am from a small city near Mannheim and have been playing gigs as a singer-songwriter since the age of sixteen. The expression of emotion has always been a need for me. So starting a solo music project was the perfect way for me to follow this passion.

Q: And what other artists have you found yourself listening to lately?

A: I´m really in love with small indie artists at the moment. My two favorites are Alice Phoebe Lou and Black Sea Dahu.

Q: Who were your first and strongest musical influences?

A:  My first and all time favorite artist is Nina Simone, especially her song “Feeling Good”. This song has also been an inspiration for my latest single “Be Alive”.

Q: You have just released your new EP, ‘Undone’. Is there a story behind it?

A: The EP guides through a personal transformation I´ve been through the past years. It starts with the song “Undone” at a place of hopelessness and disorientation. I broke out of this cycle and started living my own life with the latest single “Be Alive”

Q: Can we expect an album from you in the near future?

A: You never know, but I have only planned to release singles next year.

Q: What do you feel are the key elements in your music that should resonate with listeners, and how would you personally describe your sound?

A: The key element in my music is my voice which tells vulnerable stories combined with powerful alternative rock productions that remind of artists like Alice Merton and The Black Keys with a touch of Lana del Rey.

Q: Do you feel that your music is giving you back just as much fulfillment as the amount of work you are putting into it, or are you expecting something more?

A: Good question! No, there is so much work behind this project, I think there can never be enough fulfillment and that is okay. It’s like every other job: The 90% hard work is worth the 10 % fulfillment.

Q: Could you describe your creative processes? How do usually start, and go about shaping ideas into a completed song?

A: I have taken many classes and workshops in songwriting and created my own way of writing songs. I record new ideas immediately in Logic und try to finish them within a week. Sometimes it takes me just a day to finish a song, but for the last single I needed a whole month just for songwriting and pre-production.

Q: What has been the most difficult thing you’ve had to endure in your life or music career so far?

A: Taking myself and the way I choose to live seriously in a world full of norms and judgement.

Q: On the contrary, what would you consider a successful, proud or significant point in your life or music career so far?

A: The biggest step for me so far was to release my debut EP this winter. A whole year of work and experience lives now forever in this piece of art.
