Conversation With GARY BEALS

Can you tell us a bit of where you come from, and what made you want to start a career in music?

I’m from the vibrant and culturally rich Preston area in Nova Scotia, Canada. Growing up in Cherry Brook, a close-knit community, I was surrounded by nature and loved ones, which shaped my identity and influenced my perspective on life. Growing up singing in the church, listening to my parent’s classic soul records, and singing to 90’s R&B, is what fostered my deep connection to music’s emotional storytelling. It was my deep passion for music that led me into a music career, and I am blessed to be able to create and share my own stories.

And what other artists have you found yourself listening to lately?

I sometimes listen to a range of artists spanning various genres. From the timeless tunes of Teddy Pendergrass, Gladys Knight, and Al Green to the contemporary sounds of Adele, John Legend, and Black Pumas. I also like to groove to artists like Anderson Paak, BJ The Chicago Kid, and PJ Morton. You’ll also find me listening to some of my artist friends such as Tanika Charles, Terrell Morris, Claire Davis, Aphrose, just to name a few. My playlist varies depending on my mood which reflects my appreciation for musical expression.

Who were your first and strongest musical influences?

From a young age, gospel music held a strong sway over my musical journey. Kirk Franklin’s vibrant and emotive expressions deeply resonated with me. Michael Jackson’s universal pop influence and Whitney Houston’s captivating vocals left a positive impression and inspired me greatly. The timeless grooves of classic Soul legends James Brown and Otis Redding added another layer of influence to my musical palette.

You have just released you new single, “I Like That”. Is there a story behind it?

“I Like That” holds a special place in my heart. The song is all about celebrating the special ones in our lives and basking in the simple joys of life and the moments that bring happiness. It’s an anthem to savouring the good times and enjoying the present. The inspiration came from my own experiences and the desire to create a track that exudes positivity and a feel-good vibe. Collaborating with JRDN & KAYO brought a unique flavour to the song, adding depth and energy. Overall, “I Like That” is a musical snapshot of joyful moments and a reminder to cherish them and our loved ones.

Can we expect a new EP or even an album from you in the near?

Absolutely! I’m thrilled to share that I have a new album that is set to be released later this year. I can’t wait to unveil this new body of work and continue to connect with listeners through the music. Definitely stay tuned for more details and the release date!

What do you feel are the key elements in your music that should resonate with listeners, and how would you personally describe your sound?

I believe the key elements in my music that resonate with listeners are authenticity and relatability. My songs are grounded in real emotions and experiences, making them relatable to people’s lives. The blend of R&B, Soul, and pop influences in my music creates a sound that’s both nostalgic and contemporary. My intention is always to infuse each track with heartfelt lyrics, soulful melodies, and a touch of vulnerability. My sound is a fusion of classic and modern, drawing from my musical roots while embracing the present. It’s a journey through emotions and experiences, inviting listeners to connect on a personal level.

Do you feel that your music is giving you back just as much fulfillment as the amount of work you are putting into it, or are you expecting something more?

Creating music is a deeply fulfilling journey for me. The process of expressing myself, connecting with listeners, and seeing the impact of my music brings me joy. While the work is substantial, especially as an independent artist, the fulfillment I receive from people being touched or inspired through my art is invaluable. I don’t expect anything more than the genuine connection and resonance my music brings, making the journey incredibly rewarding.

Could you describe your creative processes? How do you usually start, and go about shaping ideas into a completed song?

My creative process often begins with a strong emotion or concept. Sometimes I like to start off with the music which then guides the emotion and the lyrical concept. I jot down lyrics or a melody that captures the essence of the music and how I’m feeling. After, I work on structuring the song, working with the producer to experiment musically. I generally prefer collaborations because I’m less in my head which for me enriches the process. Refining lyrics and arrangement comes next. The goal is to create a song that authentically conveys the original inspiration and resonates with listeners.

What has been the most difficult thing you’ve had to endure in your life or music career so far?

In both life and my music journey, facing and overcoming self-doubt and moments of uncertainty has been one of the most challenging aspects. Balancing personal growth, artistic expression, and the external pressures of the industry can be overwhelming at times.

However, these challenges have also been transformative, pushing me to dig deep, believe in my abilities, and keep pushing forward. It’s a continuous journey of self discovery and resilience.

On the contrary, what would you consider a successful, proud or significant point in your life or music career so far?

I’m truly proud to be preparing to release my fourth studio album. With nearly two decades in the industry, I’m still immersed in music, enjoying the creative process. This enduring passion is a blessing. This next album marks my third independent release, reflecting the commitment I have in sharing music on my own terms – a source of pride. Another pivotal moment was placing second on the first season of “Canadian Idol” in 2003. This catapulted my career, introducing my music to a broader audience. These milestones highlight my dedication, hard work, and profound love for music.
