Q: Hey, can you tell us a bit about where you come from, and what made you want to start a career in music?
A: McCall and I met in college, we were both computer science majors actually but what we really had a passion for was music. We had been in and out of different bands through high school and college but when the two of us met (and started dating) we decided to try and write music together. Having the stability and dedication to working together really helped propel us to the next level, and being able to create content on platforms like TikTok really brought our music to a bigger audience than ever before.
Q: Did you have any formal training, or are you self-taught?
A: We are both mostly self taught! We took a few songwriting courses in college, and McCall has taken some vocal lessons as well but overall most of what we learned was self taught or from YouTube.
Q: Who were your first and strongest musical influences?
A: The first band I ever fell in love with was Green Day. The American Idiot album was what got me to pick up bass (and then guitar). From there, it was Fall Out Boy, Boys Like Girls, and eventually The Maine.
Q: You have just released your new single, ‘Anybody else?’. Is there a story behind it?
A: We were inspired by the resurgence of 2000s music to write a song in the vein of Michelle Branch and early Avril Lavigne, two of our favorite artists from back then. The song definitely brings back a lot of nostalgic vibes, I think the best comparison I’ve heard was Liz Phair! We wrote about the feeling of anxiety that can come with being an adult and having to balance bills, jobs, family, and trying to make it in music on top of that.
Q: Can we expect a new EP or even an album from you in the near future?
A: Short answer – yes! We’ve been working on a bunch of songs over the past year that we’ve been in Nashville. We’ve only been releasing singles since last October, and we’re hoping to put some of those as well as some new songs onto an EP and release that sometime in the fall. There’s so many songs that we can’t wait to share with our fans!
Q: What do you feel are the key elements in your music that should resonate with listeners, and how would you personally describe your sound?
A: I think our music spans a lot of emotions and influences so it can be hard to describe. We have some upbeat fun songs to party to, some sad and vibey songs to listen to on your late night drives, and that’s all tied together by a heavy dose of nostalgia. I think the biggest thing we want our listeners to feel from the songs is to be able to relate to the stories we tell and it can help them through the good and the bad times.
Q: Do you feel that your music is giving you back just as much fulfillment as the amount of work you are putting into it, or are you expecting something more?
A: Right now we feel like things have been going great! Music is always a huge amount of work, and a huge time commitment but we’re trying to learn to appreciate the journey and appreciate the little milestones. We’ve gotten some really amazing feedback on our latest song and the messages we get from people really inspires us to keep going and create more music for people to enjoy.
Q: Could you describe your creative processes? How do usually start, and go about shaping ideas into a completed song?
A: Usually we start with a concept – McCall is really amazing at coming up with concepts that she’s never seen before to write about. We don’t want to write the same basic love song over and over, we’d rather try and write about what we’ve experienced in our lives. We love to bring in co-writers and we’ve worked with a ton of amazingly skilled people in Nashville so far.
Q: What has been the most difficult thing you’ve had to endure in your life or music career so far?
A: I think the hardest part for us was finding the time to balance our jobs with our music and finding our team. We feel like we’re in a really great place now and are so grateful to be working with some amazing friends that we’ve met here in Nashville. Everything takes time and I only wish we had moved here a little sooner in our career!
Q: On the contrary, what would you consider a successful, proud or significant point in your life or music career so far?
A: We’re really proud of our collab that we were able to release with Bowling for Soup – “2002”. That song really opened a lot of doors for us and it was incredible to be able to work with a band we loved so much during our childhood! Hoping that we’ll be able to meet Jaret at When We Were Young fest this year in person, that would be amazing.
