Q: Hey, can you tell us a bit about where you come from, and what made you want to start a career in music?
A: I was born in Cornwall, Ontario. I moved around rural Ontario and Quebec a bunch when I was a kid with my mother and, later, my little sister. At 10 we settled down in Saint-Jerome (45 minutes north of Montreal) and at 18 I moved to Montreal. All my teens I was soaking in the popular indie music of the 2000’s. At 19, this was in 2008-2009, that huge movement had already slowed down considerably. I decided I wanted to start a career in music when the music that other people were making suddenly didn’t interest me as much.
Q: Can you describe the musical style of Booster Fawn in three words?
A: Epic, Genius, Off-Beat
Q: How do you stay connected with your fans, and what role do they play in shaping your musical journey?
A: I was slow to start, but I’m pretty active on social media. I always try to post on there and share little tidbits about my life and the music I’m making with my band to make my fans feel involved. I always encourage in person conversations at shows when they can happen. Those are some of my favorite moments to have actually. More recently I’ve been putting the fans, or the audience, in some of the songs. They’re partially my muse after all.
Q: You have just released your new EP, ‘Pour maman’. Is there a story behind it?
A: Sort of. The story is that these are three songs sung in French that were originally composed and released in English. Since we’ve been playing the songs from Dreams Made Of Snowflakes live for a while now, some of them have naturally expanded or taken on different forms. We basically picked the three that had changed the most and decided to record them. It was quite an exercise in language skills to translate all of them, even if my native language is French.
Q: What is your favorite track from the EP and why?
A: My favorite is probably À l’intérieur de toi, à l’intérieur de moi because in the original English version it is very clear who the song is about (it’s called The Ballad Of Fiona Gallagher) while the French version is about my mother, or all mothers in a way.
Q: Can you walk us through the creative process of producing the EP, “Pour maman”?
A: It’s really cool because what people will end up hearing is the extended jams that we’ve been playing live. I think the songs are all almost double if not more their original length. We had a day to record them, so when we got in the studio it was pretty straightforward; we set up our gear, and let’er rip. We then went back and did all kinds of interesting overdubs, of course, so the result is a real stage-to-headphones kind of experience.
Q: What has been the most memorable concert or performance for Booster Fawn so far?
A: I’ve been using that stage name for my musical antics since 2016, so there are a lot of memories! One that comes to mind is when I released the Wampire EP at Le Ministere in Montreal. It was in the middle of the pandemic and very few venues were open. We got so lucky to book the room and everything went perfectly. For most people there (myself included) it was their first concert in over a year. I’ll never forget that experience.
Q: Reflecting on your body of work, each song holding its unique significance, could you share a particular track that stands out to you personally? What makes that specific tune special, and why does it hold a place of pride in your musical journey?
A: I would have to choose Bring Me To Your Secret Place. It’s a special one for me because it literally wrote itself. As if it was in my head and my heart the entire time and all I needed to do was to be ready to record it. I’ve had people tell me it was one of their favorite songs ever. I love songs that stay in my head for years before being recorded.
Q: Exploring the diverse creative processes within the music industry is always fascinating. Could you provide insight into Booster Fawn’s unique approach to crafting music? From the initial spark of an idea to the finished song, how do you navigate the creative journey and bring its musical concepts to life?
A: With the current band – that is the one that I worked with to put together and record Dreams… andPour maman – the process of bringing the spark of an idea to life has been extremely enjoyable. Usually what happens is I bring in a very short song idea for the acoustic guitar and they ‘’beef’’ it up. I tend to prefer more quiet and they tend to prefer more loud. I think we’ve struck a nice balance.
Q: As we wrap up our conversation, looking ahead, what aspirations or dreams do you have for Booster Fawn, and what message would you like to share with your fans as they continue to accompany you on this musical journey?
A: I want to keep playing bigger and bigger shows, I want to keep having fun times on and off the stage, I want to keep growing as a performer and a public person, I want to tour further and further away from Montreal and I want to make as many connections with fans as possible. I’m ready for all of it.
