Q: Hey, can you tell us a bit about where you come from, and what made you want to start a career in music?
A: I come from a small town in New Zealand called Turua where I live with my darling wife (Nearly 20 years together).
I’ve always loved music but in 1996 when I was 14 I saw a simulcast on NZ TV of Crowded House’s “Farewell To The World” concert at the Sydney Opera House & a few weeks later started learning Guitar.
Q: And what other artists have you found yourself listening to lately?
A: I listen to everything,or should I say study everything but The Finn Brothers are always going to be my biggest influence.
In the last Decade I’ve found myself borderline obsessed by everything Eminem.
P!nk would have to be my favourite female artist who I discovered through Eminem.
Also a few New Zealand Musicians who I feel don’t get enough respect such as “Brian Baker”,“The Bads” & funk duo “Something Zesty”.
Q: Who were your first and strongest musical influences, and why the name ‘Bevan Mical’?
A: As I said before Neil & Tim Finn (Crowded House,Split Enz) are my strongest influences but my first musical memory would have to be “Fraggle Rock” which is really just ‘70’s soft rock with a message.
The name Bevan Mical (pronounced Michael) is my birth name & the Mical comes from my Grandfather (who passed away in 2018) who came to New Zealand with a group of Polish orphans when he was a young boy during the Second World War.
Q: You have just released your new single, ‘Revoked’. Is there a story behind it?
A: “Revoked” is a song for people who work hard & just keep working while the Rich, the Lazy & perpetually offended keep getting handouts from Governments who just blatantly waste the money on bad ideas instead of helping people.
And a societal shift towards workers getting hated on for just wanting to get ahead themselves.
It’s me trying to express my inner Bob Dylan.
Q: Can we expect a new EP or even an album from you in the near future?
A: I’ve just updated my home studio & am currently working on a new track and after I’ve finished that song I’ll be straight into writing my 4th full album.
Q: What do you feel are the key elements in your music that should resonate with listeners, and how would you personally describe your sound?
A: My music comes from an honest place with real life experience behind every line.
Hopefully people can hear the influence from every single genre as I try to infuse all the styles I enjoy.
Q: Do you feel that your music is giving you back just as much fulfillment as the amount of work you are putting into it, or are you expecting something more?
A: I’d be lying if I said I didn’t want a million streams a week or sold out stadiums but I love the excitement that comes from creating, learning new chords & instruments & learning new production techniques.
Q: Could you describe your creative processes? How do usually start, and go about shaping ideas into a completed song?
A: It changes all the time.
Sometimes I’ll start with a title, or sometimes it might be a line or idea.
Most of the time I start with the chords then create a drum beat to build the other instruments around so it fits what I’m trying to convey & then write a basic outline which I go through adding & subtracting til it feels right.
Lately as a reflection of listening to Eminem I get excitement by putting a bit of word play into each verse.
Q: What has been the most difficult thing you’ve had to endure in your life or music career so far?
A: The most difficult thing musically would be trying to dominate the world from small town New Zealand.
Q: On the contrary, what would you consider a successful, proud or significant point in your life or music career so far?
A: My wife is always going to be my #1 achievement but with my music I keep learning new techniques while increasing my plays & listeners with each new musical endeavour.
