Avi Sic strikes back with a powerful remix of Baha Bank$ hit ‘Black Barbie’. The Chicago-based DJ and music producer is ready to reach new heights, as her releases continue to prove why her name and her music deserves to reach the top of the charts. This Electro House take on the Hip Hop original is surely a dancefloor anthem, featuring the exquisite sound and style from the unstoppable DJ. We sat down with her to learn more about the behind the scenes process of this official remix.
Here’s what she said.
Hey Avi Sic, how are you?
I’m great, thanks for having me.
Your remix of Baha Bank$ ‘Black Barbie’ is out now, can you tell us what inspired you to remix this track?
I’ve been a fan of her music for a while and we had been talking about doing an official remix for over a year. This tune ended up being the one that worked for both of us.
Did you have a specific idea of how you wanted the remix to sound like or were there any new sonic or genre explorations?
I didn’t have any idea to be honest, aside from that I wanted to create a Dance version of the original Hip Hop song. She sent me over the vocals, and I just started playing around with synths, melodies and drums and it built from there.
What’s your favorite element of this production?
I really like the drum work on this remix. That in combination with the electro synths in the drops and the sample rework, give a nod to the original version.
How does this track differ from your previous remixes?
It’s definitely more electronic, goes harder and has a nice groove. I’ve also never remixed a rap song before so that in itself makes it standout.
How long did it take you to finish this production?
A few weeks from start to finish. I gave it time to breathe in between listens and edits so I was going into the studio with a fresh ear each time.
Can you describe your version of ‘Black Barbie’ to someone who hasn’t heard it yet?
I’d classify it as Electro House. It wakes up a dance floor for sure. The vocals are hype and the beat is hot.
What’s your favorite part about remixing songs?
I love putting a spin on original tracks. Making something new out of something old can completely change the direction of the track and open it up to a new audience.
What do you look for in a track to make a remix?
I’m drawn to a variety of things. Vocals are big – a catchy hook helps. Or if it has a stand out musical lead it’s definitely more fun to work with. I also like taking songs from one genre and making it work in another, to give it maximum playability. I just think about what I’d like to play in my sets as a DJ. If it checks the boxes, I’ll give it a try.
What’s coming up for Avi Sic?
I have an original track that just dropped called “Party Party” which is out now. And another original coming out next month on Showtek’s label Skink. And I plan to release a remix in between those, so look out for that too!
