Conversation With Ashley Barksdale

Q: Hey, can you tell us a bit about where you come from, and what made you want to start a career in music?

A: hey!! I’m a girl from a very small town in upstate New York nobody has probably ever heard of. I think the closest shopping mall we have is about an hour away from my house, just to put that in perspective. Growing up I’ve always been someone who loved to watch music video countdowns and listening to what was considered mainstream for that time. I loved listening to the local radio station that also played a lot of mainstream music and I really loved watching Hannah Montana. I think watching Hannah Montana every Sunday when a new episode came out on Disney channel made me realize that singing and making pop music was what I wanted to do as my career.

Q: And what other artists have you found yourself listening to lately?

A: For starters, I’ve been listening to Dua Lipa, been listening to her for a long while now as she’s one of my idols and mentors from afar. I’m very inspired by her artistry and love for giving back to her community. I’ve also been listening to Rob Eberle, he’s an alt pop artist who I’m very close with personally. I LOVE his lyricism! INJI has also been on repeat as of late. Her genre of music is a genre I feel like I haven’t heard in a hot while, it’s very refreshing.

Q: Who were your first and strongest musical influences?

A: Katy Perry and Lady Gaga for sure. Katy Perry’s Teenage Dream album is the first CD I ever owned, and I used to watch Lady Gaga music videos religiously. I feel like these two pop girls really helped shape the type of pop music I’m inspired to make.

Q: You have just released your new single, ‘C67-C2RZ ’. Is there a story behind it?

A: C67-C2RZ is about being so free and in love with a person that it doesn’t matter what you’re doing, where you’re going, and where you end up as long as you have them. Driving recklessly with the police trailing behind the car with its sirens going off only fuels the adrenaline more.

Q: Can we expect a new EP or even an album from you in the near future?

A: I’ve been in the process of writing my debut EP for over a year now. I’m hoping to have it finished and ready for release within the next few months. I’m not in too much of a rush though. I want people to see my full potential when this EP is released to the point where it leaves people wanting more.

Q: What do you feel are the key elements in your music that should resonate with listeners, and how would you personally describe your sound?

A: honestly the genre itself is what resonates with me the most. Pop music is very bubbly, light, fun, yet complex at the same time. I feel like it fits me as a whole.

Q: Do you feel that your music is giving you back just as much fulfillment as the amount of work you are putting into it, or are you expecting something more?

A: AbsolutelyBeing able to have the opportunity to create a song that people can easily sing along to, release that song and just watch people enjoy the art is fulfilling enough for me.

Q: Could you describe your creative processes? How do usually start, and go about shaping ideas into a completed song?

A: For starters, I’m all for supporting small producers. I find a beat online that I believe matches the vibe I’m going for and I reach out to the producers to let them know I’d like to buy their beat. Once that’s taken care of, I like to listen for where the chorus drops to write the chorus first. Once I have that finished I tend to write around it and think of ideas that’ll help the chorus make sense, or I ask some of my friends to give me ideas!

Q: What has been the most difficult thing you’ve had to endure in your life or music career so far?

A: I think one of the most difficult things I’ve had to face so far with my music and my life is being able to write about my traumatic experiences. I lost my mom at a young age, and I’ve always wanted to dedicate a song to my mother as she was someone who always believed in me when it came to making music, but when I try to write about her my mind goes blank and it feels like I can’t do it, and I always ask myself why.

Q: On the contrary, what would you consider a successful, proud or significant point in your life or music career so far?

A: The release of my first song Lovers Dont Say (Goodbyes) was a significant moment for sure. Everybody who wants to be in this industry as an artist has to eventually release original music to really get their kickstart. My kickstart was the release of this song, I never felt so happy and grateful to finally have the world be able to hear what I can bring to the table. I still get people to this day walking up to me singing the chorus. It just shows I was able to make some sort of impact, and knowing I did that means the absolute world to me.
