Q: Hey, can you tell us a bit about where you come from, and what made you want to start a career in music?
A: I grew up in Sydney, Australia. Down on the southside by the Ocean. Being in the water always gave me this transcendent perspective on life. The way first light looks splitting through the waves. My love for music naturally grew out of this feeling of connectedness. Somehow this desire to experience moved over to a desire to express. Then around the age of 13, i started writing songs and playing with music. Performance and playing shows became my everything and hasn’t let up one bit (Which I’m more than happy about)
Q: Can you describe the musical style of ANT ENOCH in three words?
A: Crying Whilst Dancing
Q: How do you stay connected with your fans, and what role do they play in shaping your musical journey?
A: Sharing music has always been my love language. I spend my time making playlists for people who are connected to my music. I’m always trying to find deeper connections with my fans and to this day, seems most effective through sharing songs. Whether they be mine or Bunny Wailers
Q: You have just released your new single, ‘Television’. Is there a story behind it?
A: ‘Television’ is a story about watching a friend’s house burn down on the news. There was plenty of imagery in that experience and this song came about whilst trying to make something good out of a shit situation.
Q: What is your favorite verse from the song Television and why?
A: I love the line “Barely breathing trying to hold your shit together”. I guess i felt so seen by that lyric. So many times I’ve been head first in some drama and realised shit, I’m barely breathing right now. A good reminder for me to check in with my body.
Q: Can you walk us through the creative process of producing the single, “Television”?
A: I’ve built a studio out the back of a mattress factory. Filled with a bunch of vintage Japanese drum machines, a bunch of old keyboards and a 1960’s Star drumkit. This song came from spending countless hours of pure playtime. I’d made a weird atmospheric pad sound out of an old guitar loop and pitched it up an octave. Once the feeling was there, I played a drum beat and the phrases of the song seemed to come out quite easily.
Q: What has been the most memorable concert or performance for ANT ENOCH so far?
A: I’ve only had 2 shows so far in this project. Munich and Berlin. Whilst it’s hard to choose, I loved Berlin so much. We had wheeled in a real piano for the performance and there’s just nothing quite like having the real thing. A small room filled with soft eyes and no doubt some even softer hearts. I can’t wait ot be back to go again.
Q: Reflecting on your body of work, each song holding its unique significance, could you share a particular track that stands out to you personally? What makes that specific tune special, and why does it hold a place of pride in your musical journey?
A: ‘Television’ was a real collaborative writing experience. I wrote it with my main collaborator Georgia James AKA Moreton. We spent hours carving out the story. I guess it’s just cemented my love for collaborating with other artists.
Q: Exploring the diverse creative processes within the music industry is always fascinating. Could you provide insight into ANT ENOCH’s unique approach to crafting music? From the initial spark of an idea to the finished song, how do you navigate the creative journey and bring its musical concepts to life?
A: So much of my journey with music has centered around playtime. I’m focused on protecting that time when i show up to write music. Even if it’s one hour a day, I really try my best to check out of life’s admin and the business side of music. Trying as best I can to not be outcome focussed. I feel it’s in those spaces that I really have fun with music and can hear curiosity calling much louder. The spark of an idea can be snubbed out in milliseconds by not having the mental fortitude and disciple to protect that time. Whilst I know there comes a time to close the books and go back to reality, I’d say most of my creative happiness comes in those moments.
Q: As we wrap up our conversation, looking ahead, what aspirations or dreams do you have for ANT ENOCH, and what message would you like to share with your fans as they continue to accompany you on this musical journey?
A: My dreams around the project are all centered around performing in beautiful spaces. I’d love to take these songs on the road and find spaces that mirror or contrast they’re feeling. I think the place your listening to music has such a big impact on your experience and i can’t wait to keep striving to put on shows in places that feel transcendent.
